Death of a Leader and Undead Warbands Empty
PostSubject: Death of a Leader and Undead Warbands   Death of a Leader and Undead Warbands Icon_minitimeThu 6 Jan 2011 - 10:18

Just in case the situation comes up, if an Undead warband loses both Vampire and Necromancer, does the entire warband get disbanded, or do only the undead creatures within it "collapse into a piles of bones." Since the Undead player in our campiagn uses only Vampire, Necro, Dregs, and Ghouls (and 1 Dire Wolf), would his warband still continure with a Dreg in charge until a vampire or Necro can be repurchased? Really, neither Dreg nor Ghoul will collapse into dust, but I guess you could argue the Dregs are only around b/c they are servants, and ghouls are just kind of primitive, disorganized things, so without a solid ruler the Dregs and Ghouls would just kind of wander off and do their own thing.

This is one of those cases where actual rule seems to indicate the warband is completely dismissed, but fluff makes it seems like only the undead things go. Since the rulebook frequently mixes fluff in with the rest of the rules and doesn't indicate which is which (except in spell descriptions) this is a weird call.

In the case of Undead warbands, the death of the
Vampire means that the warband’s Necromancer must
take over. If the warband doesn’t include one, the
spells that hold the restless dead together unravel,
and the warband collapses into a pile of bones. You
can buy a Vampire after the next game, at which point
the Necromancer will step down (whether he wants
to or not) and lose the Leader skill.

I have always hated the way that was worded. Basically they are trying to say that if you don't have a Vampire or a Necromancer then all undead models in your warband are removed from your list.

It really annoys me that these important speical rules are not on the warband's list, and effectively they have a flaw that is not listed under their descriptions.

Personally I would write a house rule that would ether clairfy this. The house rule I would write would be the following:

1. I would add that to Zombies and Dire Wolves:

Construct - You must have a Vampire or a Necromancer on your list or you must remove this model from your list.

2. On Vampire I would add:

Always in Charge - The Vampire will always lead the warband as long as they are in it. The always gain the leader skill, and are counted as the leader

3. On Necromancer:

Relucktant leader - Will take leadership of the warband over any non-vampire Heroes, if a Vampire Hero is added to your list they will always defer to the Vampire Hero as the Leader.

That being said, if you were to lose both your Necromancer and your Vampire at the same time I doubt that you could bounce back from that, especially if you also loose all of your Zombies, and Dire Wolves. Dregs are not that good, and I have seen some really good Ghouls but none good enough to base your warband around.

The rule says "the warband collapses into a pile of bones." Whether that's literal or not for dregs, the warband is done for. In my opinion he's got to come back in with new guys.
