I've started re-basing the new crew: Kaptain Mogrum and the Cleavermaws!

The Cleavermaws are Orruk Pirates sailing out of Blackrocks, in Ghur, the Realm of Beasts.

Da Cleavermaw itself is a hulking conglomeration of different wrecked and captured ships, cobbled together over many years from their victims and any old junk they could salvage. The prow and stern are completely mismatched and it rides the waves in an ungainly, awkward way. It looks like a dog, steers like a cow and smells like a slum. Luckily it also packs a punch like a prizefighter: it is equipped with mechanical contractions to grapple and board an enemy and vast amounts of heavy artillery.

Her commander, Kaptain Bilgewater, was quietly mad - he firmly believed he was a serving captain in a "Royal Navy", rather than in a pirate fleet, under the command of "Admiral" Kurgan Grimjaw and serving a Prince.

He ran his crew on the lines of a formal national navy: ranks, discipline, rum-rations, attacking "enemy" vessels, and writing long tiresome written reports to the Admiral. His crew knew they were really pirates but they tended to go along with him as he always managed to find a good fight - though they were never really happy about the way he ran the ship. Unlike most pirate crews the Cleavermaws weren't very interested in gold or money, just materials that will enable their continued cruising and fighting. Anything they find aboard captured "prize" vessels that isn't immediately useful was sent back to the fleet.

But, as with groups of greenskins everywhere, if they are left to their own devices for too long things turn ugly. After a particularly long cruise, with no enemy in sight, fights started to break out below decks. Orruks are used to this and consider it their right. The also consider it perfectly normal for the Boss to wade in, crack a few heads together and stop the fight before it gets too messy. But Bilgewater went berserk: He had many of the crew flogged half to death "Ta restore a bit o' order".

This wouldn't have been a disaster if he hadn't taken a further step. A step too far for most of the Cleavermaws: he emptied the rum overboard!

That night there was a secret meeting in the depths of the forward cable tiers - a group of Big'Unz (Mogrum "Da Butcha", Mr Sludga, Lost Uzzog the Shaman, and even Mr Badrot - Bilgewater's first mate - among them) got together and plotted to overthrow Kaptain Bilgewater and his cronies.

Mogrum led a mutiny against Kaptain Bilgewater and took over command of the Cleavermaw. Bilgewater, his officers and his "redcoats" (Mollroy and Mortog) were marooned on a desert island while the rest of the crew sailed away without them.

~ ~ ~

Kaptain Mogrum Da Butcha
Skull-faced mask, big floppy hat, long red coat, festooned with pistols.
He is completely obsessed with closely examining the captured papers, maps, charts, orders, logbooks and letters - he has standing orders for the crew to gather them from captured ships. He hoards them in his cabin and, along with his clerk, pours over them for hours in the night making details notes and trying to fit them together or to make sense of them as a whole.

Mr Sludga
Pirate Orc first mate - hulking lunk of a Black Orc. Armed to da Teef, bandana, massive kutlass.

Lost Uzzog
Orc Shaman in a huge hybrid wizard/pirate hat with a tall (bent) point and a very broad brim, folded up at the front with a skull & bones pin, long beard, staff, compass, spell book and scroll.

Mr Badrot the second mate

Ledger Nud the Kaptain's clerk and Skribla his Goblin assistant.

There are more coming - I finished re-basing 6 more Cleavermaws last night but I didn't have time to take photos.

I can think of few things more satisfying than coming up with a cool name for a warrior.

Adm'rul Kurgan Grimjaw, (Mk3)

Since the AoS "Megaboss" won't fit in with my pirates I decided to make my own, using stuff I have in my bits collection.

I had two of the Warboss Grukk Facerippa models from an exchange of Orks for Marines from the Stormclaw box with Blessed Knight.

The first thing I did was remove the obviously 40k mechanical elements.

Then I started looking for likely parts to add to him.

And started adding greenstuff pirateyness:

Here he is with my previous Adm'rul Kurgan as a size comparison:

Weapons and crabs (obviously!) added. Braided hair (from Space Wolf heads!) still WIP.

It physically hurt me to cut the hands off the pirate Ogre Maneater. I will be replacing them though, so the model will get another chance at life!

I've re-based Grapeshot the "Rumguzzler" Gargant onto a 90x52mm oval base. He was surprisingly (and a bit worryingly) easy to get off his old 75x50mm rectangle base!

In case you are wondering; yes, the tattoos are based on Jack Sparrow's!

It just struck me how appropriate your bases are; they brought to mind the movie & novel On The Beach, which is a post apocalypse tale. All that aside, the Big Guy looks TERRIFIC on his new base...NICE crabs. SPLENDID WORK!   thumbsup

Well that's basically what I'd imagine a giant pirate to look like! Love all the tattoos and bandana! Like Deaf said the base is spectacular! Great work.

P.S. I feel your pain about chopping models up, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do! Although it looks like you're pretty skilled with greenstuff so you always have a fix!

Thanks guys! I really enjoyed making the base for this big guy - it's pretty simple but it captures the "shipwreck beach" feel that I want for all my pirates quite well, I think.

I've re-based the last 5 Cleavermaws! Some of these Boyz are about 10 or 11 years old, so the paint jobs are not great (although they have been partially updated a couple of years ago  - I added stripes to trousers or jackets mainly).

Lookout Lurtz

Cutter Nod

Kedger Krum

Keel'Aul

Pressgang Duff

And, even though I a making a new "Megaboss" version of him, I have re-based Adm'rul Kurgan.

Edit: I played a game with the Cleavermaws and remembered to take a group shot at the start!

Megaboss Adm'rul Kurgan Grimjaw is ready for paint, bar a few tiny details that need tweaking or cleaning up!

Since last time I have added the tails of his sea-coat, 3 pistols, a couple of nautical charts, a logbook, an hourglass and a barrel of rum.

I was ready to call the build finished (I'd taken these photos and posted them on Twitter!) when I realised it needed a final detail: a handguard for The Kutlass!

Thanks guys!

A bit of a paint-in-progress update on MegaBoss Adm'rul Kurgan, as it's taking a long time (mainly because I've had hardly any hobby time for days on end recently). The base colours are mostly set down and the first couple of washes are on. Most of what is left to do now is highlighting and detailing.
