PostSubject: Infiltration + Breathrough Scenario   Tue 21 Dec 2010 - 0:43

How do you guys handle Infiltration and the Breakthrough scenario, if it is the Skaven attacking? Seems like their Infiltration skill gives them a near automatic win for this scenario (assuming they have at least two heroes with it).

I guess it depends on how many buildings their are and how close to the edges of the map they are placed, but remember, Skaven run at 12".

And for Hidden Treasure, if an Infiltrating model is placed inside a building that would normally be searched, do you roll a search or is that building now considered at 'setup zone' building since a unit is already in it at start?

I'd argue to make them roll. They're not setting up in the building because they want to search, they're setting up to deny the other team their close buildings. This lets them search the buildings really fast, leaving one near their half the map untouched. If you make them roll, at least it gives them a 1/36 chance of finding the chest right next to the enemy and essentially hosing them (instead of the other team garunteed to be hosed right from the start).

If your gaming group likes to play the rules as written, then an infiltrating skaven warband will easily win the breakthrough scenario. It makes sense, your silly warband shouldn't be trying to block such a sneaky group and you would fail if you tried. This doesn't make for very fun gaming, however.

If your group is ok making houserules, then you can change that. I'm our skaven player and I've never skilled more that a single infiltrator, so the above issue hasn't been a problem. If I had 2 infiltrators, I guess my group would talk it over and reduce the infiltration range for the scenario. Depending on your table size, maybe the skaven can only infiltrate 8" or 12" beyond their deployment zone? You should be able to figure out a workable fix without too much grief.

Just thought of another possible fix:
Any model who takes advantage of the infiltration skill during deployment cannot count towards the victory objective. This makes sense fluff-wise as a warband should be trying to get its core models through to the objective, getting the elite scouts to advanced positions doesn't really get the band closer to their objective.

This also allows the infiltrating player a tactical choice: set up the infiltrators in strategic position to help aid the rest of your warband through the enemy barricade or deploy them with the rest of the warband, hoping that their extra numbers can increase the chances of reaching the objective.

As for the Hidden Treasure, our group rules that Hunching into a building makes that building part of your "deployment zone", which means it can't have any treasure in it. We don't have many Infiltrators, but I'm sure we'd apply it to- any building within 6" or 8" (or something) from the figure do not count as searchable.

Infiltrate is relatively easy to block in the Breakthrough scenario. Just spread out a bit and read the infiltrate rule carefully. Since the infiltrator may not set up within 12" of an enemy model and must not be seen, options should not be too difficult to take away.

For Hidden Treasure we don't worry about it, since the treasure has to be carried off or defended.

That and we use Styrofoamking's X Marks the Spot rules from Sartosa for all Hidden Treasures now.

I have played with and against Skaven and this isn't a problem for us. As Von Kurst says, after the first time it happens it generally doesn't happen again once you know what Skaven are capable of. In addition to the setup advice above, both Hunch and Tactician help reduce Skaven infiltrating shenanigans.

I play Lizardmen and today we played breakthrough. I have two skink great crests with the infiltrate ability (same as skaven). I could have played it that way, but I instead denied the undead player the use of the right side of the board. I did end up winning. We talked about it afterward and I thought I would search to see what you guys thought about it. I like the house rule for not counting toward objectives and the deployment counting toward your starting zone.

Those will probably be our house rules.

On another note, do you guys keep track of your house rules, or do you just discuss them before the game as they come up?

In my group there is only about 6-7 core players and we pretty much have all of the house rules memorized. That can sometimes be tricky when a new player comes along and we forget which rules are house rules and which are official rules.

If I am running a campaign at the local club then I will write down all the house rules we will be using for the campaign.
