after several hours sweat on adobe illustrator, managed to laser cut a five floor house, with stairs. i plan to flesh out future ones with damage and paneling.

check out our group's blog here

edit: can't get my images to show. they are linked from my blogger. if you can see them let me know. follow the link to see them anyway.

That's a great house. I don't know how laser cutting works, how expensive or time consuming it is, but the result looks great. Two things though:
- it doesn't look like a ruin to me. More like a house that's not finished yet. The craftsmen went for lunch to get the roof done later
- isn't it a bit on the big size? both to store and, more importantly, gameplaywise? I imagine it would take a model half a game to get from bottom to top

cheers for the comments!

laser cutting costs me nothing as im a lecturer at the art college where it lives conveniently. this was just a makette to prove it could work, so future buildings are to be destroyed.

i think im going to make the roofing from a thinner material so i can layer tiles without it becoming too bulky. also im going to engrave brick patterns and wooden planks onto the floors of future cuts.

it is a little tall, but the plan of out boards is that you can have an entire battle numerous stories up due to makeshift bridges and walls. a building this tall though would be a centrepiece building though.

as far as storage goes....yeah...it gets worse when i eventually tell you all about the 2' hexagonal modular terrain system we developed.

Great first posts! Including a model would help determine scale. Laser cutting depends on access to the tools which is quite limited at the moment. Several miniature scenery companies have tried to make a go of such production with mixed results. There was a pseudo-Mordheim line a few years ago (The Tower of Terror is one offering I remember.)

Now that's a coincidence...my friend, Old John, has built a hexagon table to accommodate the Geo-Hex terrain tiles I sent him way back when. It will be interesting/enlightening to see what you do with the concept. What a Face

oh cool. what were the geo hex tiles like? we were going to use mini hexagons to create a city map, sort of like the expanded campaign system with the nodes. the larger hexagons would then be representative of the mini ones.

The magnificent laser-cut-plymouth-plywood with coffee stirers and laser cut tiles. then some rough handling with pliers. each floor measures just short of 6cm, so an ogre can make it inside.

Trying to keep a brown/red/grey colour scheme.

Now THAT is a great ruin! And also works better gameplaywise, I'm sure.

VERY NICE LOOKING building & minis! The laser cut certainly produces an EXCELLENT model...it's a method used by some of the better model railroad scenery makers, like Bar Mills. thumbsup

Originally I had picked up several boxes of Geo-Hex terrain to be used in an AD&D Campaign I was involved in; HOWEVER, the terrain lost the battle for table space to the onion dips & chips. Suspect

Geo-Hex tiles were at one time the state of the art table-top terrain system. The tiles are about 6 3/4" per side & 1' from side to side. They're made of a sturdy packing style foam board with either one side flocked & the other painted or both flocked with a road imprinted on one side. There are beveled pieces for slopes & river sides (our table is done up with a water effect). In addition to the normal tiles I have a rough terrain & sunken road set plus the custom ones I'm doing for spooky woods. The table itself is a hexagon with 42" sides & a little over 6' across.

There is or was a company producing small unpainted hex tiles. I'll try to find out their name & current availability for you. What a Face

Yeah that would be no problem. They are a bit complicated, and construction is quite experimentative. I'm going to put together a User-Friendly version as a teaching aide, so I'll put that one up when its done!
