PostSubject: Making a game board   Making a game board Icon_minitimeThu 17 Feb 2011 - 13:56

Hi, I just wanted to ask your advice on making a game board. What I'm planning on doing is making large sections of flagstone and cobblestone out of clay, firing it and then affixing it to a large piece of MDF board.

What I'm wondering is how big a board I should use. What would you recommend?

It kind of depends on what kind of gameboard you want. Do you want a static one, that is the same from game to game, or one with sections that can be exchanged and rearranged? I would go with the latter - making sections that are 1' by 1'. The proposed size for games in the rule book is 4'x4', so 2'x2' sections would probably work as well.

Thanks I was going to have just the one board with the tiles on and then place buildings on top, four lots of 2x2 sounds good. If I had four big tiles like that I could make alternate tiles as well like a port section or sewers, I think that would work nicely.

Take a look at this post (right NOW) it is the one under yours.

My friend made a board using squares 1ft x 1ft. He added buildings at the center of each square. That way the whole city can be rearranged simply by turning the squares, or shuffle the pieces =)

Storage and transport are the big bugaboos to be faced with attaching buildings to boards.
I made 2x2, 1x2 and some odd sized boards of varying heights. We can re-arrange the boards and the buildings in any combination of 2x4, 4x4 or larger.

We play at a game store most of the time, but also have battles in Playtable's garage. So all the terrain has to be able to transport.

Nice scenery Brimstone! I'm not fixing buildings to them, I'm just making a playing surface so they should be easy to store. They're going to be heavy though so looks like I'll be playing host.

i found a guy (well, to be honest, it was Werekin who found him) on ebay who sells sheets of the blue polystyrene stuff in blocks cut to size. i use the 2' x 2' x 2" stuff, got 6 of them (4 here, 2 on order). i find as they are light but study they are perfect for gaming. also find that they are a good size for storage too.

only problem is i think i need another 10 as i want winter terrain for 40k and autuminal for fantasy!

Ah cheers Frog that sounds excellent I'll have a look. I wanted to replicate the look of the old polystyrene Bloodbowl boards if anyone has seen them. I tried making some clay flooring but it's just too heavy so I'll have a look for some of that stuff instead. Thanks!
