“Island Hopping III”
A Tale of Strife in the Vampire Ranks.

Valten Von Carstein examined the small statue. He had found similar ones on many of these delta islands. He did not understand their purpose but he sensed the power in them and he had this area firmly under his control, so he would make the power serve him.
It had been a wonderful evening. The weather was foul, his victims foolish and the night dark, sublime!

Muddy waters.
</A>

The Evil Doers converge. Valten and Wolfy II (or perhaps III) cross a bridge.
</A>

The only drawback had been the loss of that foolish ghoul. Eaten by a crocodile, how drool. Otherwise it had been nothing but personal triumph as usual. The upstart Strigoi had been cut down with ease. Imagine one of the Undying trying to match muscle and anger against his blade, fool!

The Strigoi attacked from the river. On the bridge Wolfy sniffed at a curious gravestone. (It’s a bat, Wolfy! Watch out!)
</A>

Frenzied Totem Warriors draw their sisters into a watery fight with a crocodile. The croc lost.
</A>

The Strigoi fled into the night with heavy losses. The Amazons maneuvered, but avoided challenging the Evil Doers directly. The Evil Doers win.

Post Battle by Playtable
I don't think the Amazons had any losses.

I had a new ghoul get "Lad's Got Talent" on his first advance.
I bought a new ghoul to replace the one eaten by the croc.
I bought 4 lucky charms.

One of the Strgoi's ghouls got multiple injuries and rolled Animal Attack (Pit Fight) twice. He killed the first cold one but the 2nd one ate him.

Scythe the ghoul is surprised while feeding on his first kill.

A very good battle report with great pictures!
I love the amazon models and the crocodile - in fact your animal/beast models look so nice they steal the glory from the warbands Wink .

Thanks mate.

Amazons:
My lizards would like to face those Amazons, but we Natives are leery of beating each other up and leaving the undead to steal our land (or somesuch). That and the Amazons have all those nasty no armor save weapons and use Lizards for the obscene 'Skins and Charms' equipment. Horrible.

Much better to lurk in the jungles and ambush the Undead.

Animals:
That's one of the things I love about the non-Mordheim campaigns, lots of flora and fauna to flesh out the setting.

Warbands:
For flash warbands check out RikLok's battle report on this same forum. You want vibrant warbands he and his friend have them! Cool

Week 3--Drums along the Lambada.

"The Signpost"
A Brief Tale of Frustrated Women Who carry Swords.

The Azure Band attempted to thwart the Shadow Stalkers as the undead searched for a hidden road to the ruins of Axlotl. The two warbands fought bitterly for the eroded signpost with casualties on both sides (4 warriors OOA for each). The Serpent Priestess tried to keep her women in the fight but eventually the toll proved too heavy and the Amazons withdrew back into the jungle to fight again.

Post Battle.
Both sides report a henchman or woman killed. One of the Amazon heroes is captured by the undead. She is ransomed. Coincidentally, the Shadow Stalkers gain enough resources to create an Abomination. zombie
In addition one of the Necrarch's minions is promoted for his willingness to take unacceptable risks.

The Shadow Stalkers have found the final clue to the location of the ruin of Axlotl.

Week 3—Drums on the Lambada
Part II—Crossing Bridges.
Narration by Von Kurst, photos by Playtable [Sorry about the fuzzy pics.].

“The Bridge of Doom I”
A Glorious Victory for the Servants of Tzunki.
The River God Tzunki blessed the Guardians. Their enemies the foul Blood Drinkers were delivered onto them and defeated by Tzunki’s holy wrath.

Yaotl and a saurus brave advance on to the bridge behind a screen of skinks.
</A>

Xiuhpilli and his guard cross in a boat.
</A>

The Evil Doers paddle for the opposite shore as crocodiles swarm toward them.
</A>

Wolfy leads the other Evil Doers onto the bridge. There aren’t enough of them.</A>

Wolfy rushed the lead skink. The wolf tore the skink to bits, however Wolfy was in turn swept off the bridge by a sudden sword stroke. The poor brute plummeted into the river below, never to be seen again. (Until the necromancer reconstructs it…)
Yoatl and Matlal stood side by side. The ghoul Boris led one of his pack-mates to its death. Yoatl killed Boris. Matlal killed the lesser ghoul. The saurus faced the next wave of their enemies. The hated Valten attacked Yoatl while one of his minions braced Matlal. Yoatl was forced off the bridge by a blow from Valten’s halberd. Matlal sank bleeding to the bridge’s planks. Only the Great Crest Chimalma and another skink brave stood between the Evil Doers and the road to Axlotl.
At this point three miracles of Tzunki occurred. First Yoatl survived the fall into the river and managed to stay afloat. All agree that this could not have happened were it not for Tzunki’s intervention. Second the surviving skink brave was able to defeat the warrior who had felled Matlal. All agree that Tzunki guided the skink’s dagger. Third the vampire Valten fell back rather than aide his minion against the skink. All agree that Tzunki clouded the mind of Valten and made him see two Kroxigor instead of two skinks.
Faced with such staunch resistance and in danger of being overrun the Evil Doers fled.

Post Battle
The Guardians lost the skink brave killed by Wolfy. The Guardians replace the lost skink and add another as well.

The Evil Doers lose Wolfy, the ghoul and Boris! (3 out of 4 casualties. I don’t remember what wound the dreg suffered.) [Playtable: “Full Recovery”]

“The Bridge of Doom II”
A Sequel in which the Villain gets the Girl

Valten Von Carstein looked at the ruined city of Axlotl spread out below him. Long ago his master Luthor Harkon had looted and destroyed this city. Tonight Valten had found it for himself. Now he would discover why his master had forbidden his thralls to explore this ruin. Bwahhahaha!
It had been a long and difficult journey, but in the end all he had had to do was capture one bridge. Once he had lured the crazed warrior women to their doom the road was clear.

The Azure Band battle a ghoul and a Dreg on the bridge. What’s out of sight below the cliff? [A ghoul failing to climb any higher. He's holding up a skull to see over the edge with.]
</A>

The Evil Doers are climbing the cliff! [Except the ghouls fail and the Amazon Priestess cast a spell on the vampire so he couldn't do anything.]
</A>

One of the Totem warriors leapt from the bridge to attack his boat. The foolish girl misjudged her leap. She was easily dealt with as she thrashed in the water. The other fought against his minions above on the bridge. Numbers overwhelmed her as her more timid sisters cowered in fear of his ghouls. With their champions hours de combat the women lost their will to fight.

Post Battle
The Evil Doers have won three exploration scenarios and ‘found the Lost City’. The last skirmish cost them another ghoul.
[Playtable: "Ouch that hurts! 1-Dire Wolf, 3-Ghouls die in 2 games. Total of 170gc lost this night. No, I can't replace them all, yet. I need to pay someone to make recovery rolls for me."]

The Azure Band loses again. Casualty reports are not yet available.

Week 3—Drums on the Lambada
Part III—The Taint of Chaos.
Narration by Von Kurst, photos by Playtable.

“The Secrets of Beujuntae”
A Tale of Ancient Curses and Wonderful Treasures.
Xiuhpilli chanted litanies of purity and faith as he led the Guardians into the Vale of Ancient Death. This valley was a Place Out of Time. The skies were always dark here. Winds blew on the calmest days. The Hungry Trees grew in abundance. All because of the Evil One imprisoned here long ago. Xiuhpilli was ordered to check the seals on the Evil One’s prison. The Blood Drinkers meddled in all things in their blind quest for power. If they weakened the wards on this valley great evil could stalk the Good Green World again.
The Guardians had barely begun their descent into the valley when the Skink Priest realized that things were indeed in dire straits. Xiuhpilli could feel the presence of the Evil One. It was still tied to the valley but he could feel it in the air and in the very trees. Suddenly he realized it saw with his own eyes! The foul spirit possessed the priest. Xiuhpilli’s body attacked one of his own scouts! Struck from behind the skink fell without knowing his leader had attacked him. As the rest of the patrol looked on in horror the Priest gave a great shout and fell senseless himself.
Yaotl roared, “Enemy beware!” He led his saurus against the nearest Hungry Trees. But to their surprise once the plant was hacked apart, the Totem warrior cut down the warrior Chac as well. Then Yaotl seemed to realize what he had done before he collapsed on top of the body.
Xiuhpilli revived. He ordered his warriors to split up, and to watch each other for the Great Trickster walked unseen among them. The Guardians advanced with many backward glances and nervous looks.
Arrows shot out of the surrounding jungle. Then the pale servants of the Blood Drinkers sallied forth. The Guardians played a deadly game of tag with the warm-bloods and their bloodless allies. The Blood Drinker was seen to leave the forbidden tomb heavily laden with treasures.
Again Xiuhpilli fell victim to the Trickster, but this time the priest found himself raging in a dark stand of trees far from living victims. The Trickster raged impotently and left the priest senseless and helpless in the jungle.
The Trickster swept over the jungle drawn to the wild rage and pulsing power of the Blood Drinker. The Evil One easily took control of the Blood Drinker and vented its rage against a Hungry Tree. Then it struck the Blood Drinker down in front of his minions. The Hungry Tree felled one of the warm-blooded servants as well. The servants of the Blood Drinker fled.

The skirmish nears its end. Xiuhpilli is still recovering but the Necrarch is possessed.
</A>

The Necrarch and a minion are about to fall to a Carnivorous Plant. They will survive.
</A>

Post Battle
The Necrarchs had 3 heroes OOA. They all survive with various not so bad outcomes, Horrible Scars and Madness-Frenzy. Carnivorous Plants or the Beujuntae caused all casualties.

The Guardians are lucky as well. Both the skink and the Saurus warrior survive being attacked by the Lizardman heroes. The Guardians gain ALL of the possible rewards of the scenario. Woot!

Week 4—The Jungle Primeval
Playtable was a bit rushed this week. The camera did not make it into the store. Thus I have only my words to entertain you...

“The Trail of Death”
A Tale of Women Scorned.
The Necrarch led the Shadow Stalkers steadily south and west into the jungle along the newly discovered road. Because so many of his minions were still of the Living he decided to trust to the thick jungle canopy and press on during the day. It was not long before the column fell afoul of an inept ambush by a small band of goblins.
The vampires fought a brief bloody skirmish with the greenskins, which resulted in the inevitable deaths of all the goblins. The Shadow Stalkers had no time to recover from the fight with the goblins before the screaming berserkers of the Azure Band struck them. The lead warriors of the undead force were struck down (including the Thrall!) The Necrarch raged as he realized his Abomination had been frozen in place by sorcery equal to his own. Undaunted the Shadow Stalkers kept feeding men into the fight and the crazed women were slowly forced back. Their shield sisters were cut down around them. As always the women were forced to flee by the superior numbers of the Necrarch’s minions even without the support of the Abomination.

Post Battle
The Shadow Stalkers lose only mindless minions. The Necrarch is able to replace or reanimate them.
The Thrall survives an Animal Attack!
Quote :
Nothma the Necrarch thrall staggered along the narrow jungle trail. He was furious. This was another of Lord Melderzhus’ tests! He had returned to awareness with the night to find himself on the bottom of a pile of corpses. His master and their servants had left him with the slain at the mercy of any passing scavenger.
Moving quickly the fledgling vampire had left the scene of slaughter and followed his master inland toward the lost city of the Slann. Nothma could easily trail the rest of the warband, but he had seen one of his master’s secret signs directing Nothma to this trail. Nothma had thought the trail a short cut perhaps, but after a few leagues the cryptic sigils had disappeared. The vampire realized he had been misdirected; now he only had to keep moving to find out why.
When the Cold One charged it was almost a relief.
A short time later Nothma jogged quickly down the trail. He had fed. He was stronger. Nothma traveled briskly through the Lustrian night, eager to look upon his master’s cruel face.

The Amazons lose another warrior.

“Mule Train”
A Tale of the Frustrations of Long Eared Equines.
The Serpent Priestess, Bergdis, tugged on the lead rope and added a mental goad to control the animal as well. The beast defied her anyway. Bergdis considered her sword, whether to unload the pack before she killed this hoofed fiend and the distance to the river.
“Scaled Ones!” The cry was superfluous, but that was Borghild. Arrows and javelins fell among them, although none hit anything in the rain. As one her warriors dropped the ropes of the mules and faded into the jungle on the north side of the trail. The stubborn animals milled about in confusion. One bolted into the jungle to the south. Bergdis hoped a Thunder Lizard choked on it.
In confusion of the ambush it was hard to be sure but Bergdis thought that the Scaled Ones fought against themselves. Two of the nearest of the small Scaled Ones were attacked from the jungle by others of their kind. The hoots and chirps of the Scaled Ones sounded confused and fearful. The newcomers defeated the ambushers along the north side of the trail.
To thank them Borghild and Bothildr screamed their battle rage. They gathered their shield sisters and rushed at the small lizard warriors. Even though they had broken the ambush the lizards met the Totem Warriors gladly with spear and arrow. But the small lizards had no chance against the berserker charge. They were swept away in a red ruin.
However even as her best warriors rushed deeper into the northern tangle of jungle, Bergdis watched the errant mule plunge back out of the southern jungle with even more Scaled Ones pursuing it.
More of the mules ran back toward her warriors. The panicked animals blundered into the women, blocking their aim and nearly trampling them. The fresh wave of cold-blooded attackers followed close behind the mules and overwhelmed the scattered Amazon fighters. Bergdis signaled the survivors to flee.

Post Battle
The Guardians survived an unlikely encounter with hostile skinks and drove the Amazons from the field. Chimalma takes a deep wound from a skink spear. Another brave was killed by the enemy skinks and the Amazon’s Sun Staff burned a javelin thrower. Killed and captured mules yield a nice return.

The Amazons lose a warrior to Yaotl’s sword. All of the Amazon heroes evade the ambush and keep the warband’s income flowing despite the loss of the mules.

Week 4--Part II
The Vampires reach the city of Axlotl.

“The Vault”
A Tale Hidden Treasures, Deadly Traps, Greed and Murder.

Melderzhus.
The Necrarch Melderzhus cursed the cunning of the Lizard folk. The secret entrance to the hidden treasure vault was on the roof of the temple! It defied all logic. Luckily he had sent that fool up there just to check. Still the Lizard folk’s guards were closing in and he could sense that bumbler Valten Von Carstein somewhere close by as well. Sometimes it was all too much. He entered the dark building and began to climb a twisting stair. The Abomination and the zombies ranged around the entrances to hold them. Most of his Living henchmen were searching elsewhere, more fools! He could only hope they understood the signal and rallied to him here.

Valten.
“Cut them down!” ordered Valten Von Carstien as his minions fell back form the door for the third time. “We must win through! The reward must be great, these fools spend their lives to guard it!” (No one mentioned that zombies have already spent their life.) The vampire watched for a moment to be sure that his minions would attack again. Then he tossed his rope up toward the ornate crenellations of the temple and effortlessly climbed up to the unguarded parapet. His misshapen human servants followed his lead, although they were less graceful. Soon they had the roof ringed with steel. Valten paced the lower parapet. One more cast of his rope would gain him the roof, but he knew the Necrarch had left guards up there. And his minions below had pushed the defenders back to the middle landing. Soon his force would be reunited on this level. Valten paused.

Melderzhus.
“Faster!” Melderzhus goaded the slower Nothma. The two of them carried the ornate chest toward the distant stair. The crumpled body of the impetuous servant who discovered the entrance lay across the corridor in front of them. The blind fool should have awaited them as ordered! At least there would be no mewling pleas for reward or advancement. Melderzhus scanned the corridor for the trigger of the trap. He had easily avoided it on the trip into the vault. Now all he had to do was…
Melderzhus twisted to his right as he felt the bloody flagstone shift. Curses! The heavy burden of the chest slowed him, that fool Nothma went left! One of the flashing blades cut into his side. Melderzhus drove the pain from his mind. Nothma was unharmed. Silently Melderzhus vowed revenge on the clumsy fool, but for now he needed his help with the treasure and the reception that meddler Von Carstein had prepared for them above.

Valten.
The imbeciles! All they had to do was destroy two moldering zombies! Their failure had cost him precious time. Melderzhus had reached the roof! Now Valten was forced to either assault two vampires and their servants or wait for an attack from above. He felt the life force of another ghoul weaken. Why did the cretin attack that monstrosity? Why didn’t it seek the weaker zombie? Must he do everything himself? Valten felt the minds of his servants shift to thoughts of flight and safety. He allowed himself a glance at the parapet, just to measure the distance in case he had to jump for it.

Post Battle
The Evil Doers flee. One ghoul is killed in the assault.

The Shadow Stalkers suffer the hero Lamar and one of their living servants killed. Two of the other acolytes recover from their wounds. The fabulous treasure is revealed to be a few baubles in a lead lined chest. Melderzhus smashes the traitorous stone tablet that led him to it.

Week 4.5—Massacre at “The Haunted Hulks”
A Nautical Variant of Occupy
Also titled: Evil Doing doesn’t Pay or Playtable’s Lament or How the Skinks Stole Xmas.
Gloating narrative by Von Kurst. Photos by Playtable.

The Guardians infiltrated the ruins of Itzachalobay. The night was dark but clear. Fortunately witchfire torches were burning on the Flying Dutchman’s main deck and all her aft lanterns were lit as well. The Evil Doers attempted to expand their territorial control within the ruin by thwarting the interlopers.
</A>

Luthor Harkon’s skeleton pirate sentries challenged both warbands. Neither the Guardians nor the Evil Doers were troubled by the challenge.

A zombie and ghoul put paid to a meddling sentry on Valten’s orders.
</A>

Yaotl sends an undead pirate back to Davy Jone’s Locker.
</A>

Yaotl cleared the Flying Dutchman’s decks of undead pirates by himself. The Guardians took the Flying Dutchman’s bow and main hatchway while the Evil Doers boarded aft through the captain’s quarters. Ghouls lurked in the darkened cabin rather than challenge the saurus for the decks.

The Guardians brought reinforcements in the form of skinks from the north and more saurus braves from the east. Valten led a mixed boarding party from the west as the necromancer and a dreg approached from the south. The victorious ghoul left the bone pile that had been a sentry. It leapt into the dark waters of the cove and swam toward the well-lit galleon and a handy boarding ladder.

The Evil Doers attack from the west.
</A>

The necromancer and the dreg came under attack from the skinks gathering by the aft balcony. The necromancer was able to use dark magic to steal the life essence of one of the skinks. His victim toppled sensless into the water, but revived later. The dreg boldly leapt the rail of the balcony to deal with the uninjured skink, but he caught his foot in the rail, tripped and fell headfirst into the jolly boat. The skink sidestepped the falling body then kicked the broken-necked corpse overboard.

A ghoul roared and leapt for the rail. It also tripped but managed to land unharmed.

Then the skinks filled it with poisoned arrows as the horrified necromancer looked on.
</A>

“Have at them!” Valten and two ghouls rushed the saurus guarding the larboard bridge. Valten’s halberd bit deep and the crippled brave fell away. None of the ghouls survived the charge. Valten fell wounded under the flailing weapons of the vengeful Yaotl and his saurus braves.

Post Battle
The Evil Doers flee with 6 out of 11 models OOA. A ghoul recovers. Valten suffers a Nervous Condition. The dreg (Pin Head) and 3 ghouls (Bob, Hef and Ugly) die!

Week 5—“The Lost Temple of the Slann”
A Lustrian version of the “Wizard’s Mansion”
Narrative by Von Kurst. Photos by Playtable.

Flush with success the Guardians returned to Axotl. There they discovered that Blood Drinkers had killed some of the skinks left to guard the secrets of the ruins and plundered one of the decoy treasure chambers. Xiuhpilli doubled the patrols and moved his headquarters to the nearby Temple of the Ascendant Earth Dragon. The priest sent scouting parties into the ruins and the surrounding jungle but the area was quiet for several weeks. Until one night when Morrslieb rose crimson in the east, the scouts reported that the Sons of Sotek were very agitated throughout the ruin. In addition minions of the Blood Drinkers were seen entering the ruins from the east while there was no report at all from the scouts sent to watch the western approaches.

Xiuhpilli was roused at the hour of the Monkey Screaming in Fright. Outside the wind howled with such force that it was hard to hear the sentries report. The priest ordered the garrison roused and the battlements manned. The Lizardmen waited, peering tensely into the inky darkness. The wind whipped the nearby jungle making twisting shadows that constantly changed shape and direction.

The Evil Doers emerge from the gloom to assault the temple.
</A>

The women of the Azure Band occupy the jungle to the west.
</A>

Battle is joined outside the Temple. The wolf represents a Giant Constrictor (that has just taken a ghoul OOA).
</A>

The Amazon’s battle a wolfish constrictor in the undergrowth of the west ruins.
</A>

The Evil Doers gained a foothold on the temple’s parapet. On the ground floor Yaotl the totem warrior rushed out of the interior and met the attack head on. Uglier the ghoul stepped in front of the next saurus to cut Yaotl off, but Yaotl easily dealt with a dreg and a zombie. Uglier survived the saurus’ attacks but was blindsided by the constrictor-wolf. Matlal swept the Dreg who had gained the parapet back over the edge and the Evil Doers fled.

The struggle for the ground floor becomes a fight between the Guardians and the Azure Band. One wolf-snake attack saurus braves. Xiuhpilli makes a diving charge on a stunned wolf-snake.
</A>

The Amazons brave the arrow and javelin storm, which on account of the high winds and darkness is totally useless.
</A>

Tototl the skink makes a diving charge on the fearsome Amazon totem warrior Borghild.
</A>

Take that Crazy Lady!
</A>

Meanwhile the equally fearsome Bothildr clambered up the wall to attack the cowering Chicomecoatl. Little green Quauhtli bravely comes to his aide.
</A>

Chicomecoatl is bested, but Quauhtli slashes the Amazon with his daggers and she falls away.

As usual when both Totem Warriors are down the Amazons flee! No casualties are reported but some grumbling about “miss a game” is heard. The Amazons search for rare items and recruit more warriors. One Amazon is promoted for facing Matlal and surviving.

The Evil Doers report no deaths for once. More ghouls are sought.

The Guardians gain wealth and treasures. Tototl the skink brave is promoted for his attack on Borghild. Matlal the veteran saurus brave is promoted as well for his successful defense of the parapet against the undead and the ground floor against the Amazons. The Guardians now have 6 heroes. Woot!

Hey Captain,
They are Hordes models of some type I believe. Smalls likes to use his Warmachine figs in both games.

Week 6—Ancient Treasures and Sudden Death
“Skirmish”
More Strife in the Vampire Ranks
The Shadow Walkers and the Evil Doers clashed openly amid the ruins of Naufragio. Perhaps the fight was about the control of one of Luthor Harkon’s zombie pirate crews, perhaps it was merely a clash of personalities between the Necrach and the Von Carstien bloodlines. Whatever the reason, the two warbands fought each other all along a stretch of ruined waterfront. Harkon’s zombie sailors attempted to join the fighting but were wiped out in short order.
The initial resistance shocked both Melderzhus and Valten. A Harkon zombie wounded the ancient sorcerer with only its clawed hands! The Necrarch cut the presumptuous undead pirate down. Another zombie sent one of Valten’s dregs out of action.

The wounded Melderzhus led his minions against the servants of the Von Carsteins. Valten’s ghouls and dregs were no match for Melderzhus and his thrall Nothma. Valten destroyed the last of Harkon’s zombies and fled.

Post Battle.
No one or no thing is killed despite several casualties on both sides. Once the Evil Doer’s fled, Melderzhus unearthed the rare Damned Book from a forgotten trove aboard one of the hulks in the cove.

Another of Valten’s dregs is driven mad. The unfortunate now suffers from Stupidity.

Week 6—Ancient Treasures and Sudden Death,Part II

“The Temple of Doom”
Or How Xiuhpilli Defeated the Tests of the Hall of Spirits.

Xiuhpilli.
Xiuhpilli hissed with frustration. Then he calmed himself with the Glorious Litanies of Peace and Clarity given to the skinks by the Venerable Lord Atlfoi millennia ago. The priest felt his mind clear. The problem still remained. He and his cohort must reach the Chamber of Tranquility before the warm-bloods. The shortest route through the maze led through the Hall of Spirits. The damned souls trapped in this corridor hated the living, but they hated the True Beings more than others, since his masters the Slann had killed them and bound them to guard the corridor for eternity.

Three of the skink braves had tripped in the darkness. Three others had triggered traps. One had blundered into a cage trap. Two others had activated spirits. One of the braves had fled hooting down the corridor. His terror was unsettling the other braves and amusing to the stolid saurus.

Xiuhpilli tried to count his own steps as he passed the trigger of another spirit catcher. Even in its dormant state the priest’s heightened senses could feel the spirit’s hatred in the air. Xiuhpilli changed his chant from the Glorious Litanies to the One Hundred Tenants of Spiritual Strength and Fortitude of the Venerated Lord Chacahlt, may he continue to live forever.

Yaotl.
Yaotl marched down the center of the corridor careful to step where the nimble priest stepped. Matlal and Chac followed in their leader’s footsteps as well. Ahead in the darkness they began to make out the glowing shapes of the spirit guardians. Several of the skinks had fled from the guardians, which caused the saurus warriors to fill the corridor with the hacking sound of their mirth. One of the little cowards blundered into Yaotl. The big warrior continued to advance but he had become misaligned with the priest. A stone moved and an iron cage clanged down from above to imprison Yaotl!

Yaotl roared in frustration. Xiuhpilli turned with the sound of the falling cage. He ceased his recitation of the One Hundred Tenants and instead spoke the words of power to invoke Tinci’s Rage. Yaotl’s roars reflected the god’s anger and strength. The totem warrior easily cut through the ancient bars with his shining star-metal sword. Yaotl flung the sundered cage from him as he lunged forward. Naturally his abrupt actions set off an arrow trap. Half a dozen poisoned arrows arched toward him from the north wall of the corridor. Most were stopped by his magical Stegadon Bone Armor or his thick hide. But one of them struck Yaotl’s helmet a glancing blow and the huge warrior toppled to the floor. The rest of the band stared in wonder at their fallen champion.

Xiuhpilli.
Xiuhpilli looked at the fallen totem warrior for a moment. Even in the darkness the priest’s keen eyes could see the warrior’s chest rise and fall. “He will recover soon,” declared Xiuhpilli. “Let us enter the chamber before the warm-blood-two-legs arrive.”

Two members of the Emerald Spawning entered the chamber before the priest. Matlal and Chac followed with halberds at the ready. The Chamber of Tranquility was not very large but it was almost the length of the Hall of Spirits and twice as wide. The vaulted ceiling disappeared above their heads. Three other openings pierced the walls. From the one directly across came wails and screams. It was too dark to read the glyphs on the opposite arch clearly, but Xiuhpilli knew they proclaimed the Hall of Falling Cages. He dismissed the warm-bloods for the moment and turned his attention to the altar at the center of the room.

“One Emerald Three,” he began, “approach the altar by taking two steps to your left and three steps forward.”

When the skink had arrived at the south face of the altar the priest continued. “Excellent, now you must lift the golden cask straight up while leaping back the length of a war spear. You must leap very quickly,” the priest instructed. “Are you prepared?”

“As you will Great Xiuhpilli,” said the skink.

“Begin,” ordered the priest.

The skink lifted the casket and leapt backward. A loud crash resounded through the chamber as the paving stones immediately surrounding the altar fell away. The skink landed on the edge of the trench still holding the small golden box. Before his comrades could congratulate him a warm-blood female burst into the chamber and threw a javelin.

“We have the artifact,” shouted Xiuhpilli as he unlimbered his bow. “Fall back into the Hall of Spirits!”

One Emerald Three hurried for the entrance to the Hall of Spirits as Xiuhpilli and Three Emerald Three shot arrows at the warm-bloods. Matlal and Chac took up positions beside the entrance and waved their halberds at the enemy. A bright beam lanced across the room and burst on the wall near Chac.

“Beware the Light That Kills!” Xiuhpilli called to his warriors as he fired an arrow into the sudden darkness that seemed to envelope the room after the bright light of the energy weapon. The priest felt the presence of hostile magic so he intoned the words of the Old One’s Protection. The skinks fled the room while the saurus warriors shuffled backwards with the blades of their halberds toward the enemy. In the uncertain light most missiles flew wide although the saurus’ thick hides and armor plates were soon festooned with arrows that had failed to penetrate.

Yaolt.
“Warm-bloods!” Yaolt regained consciousness suddenly. He was completely aware, yet his reflexes were, as always, slow. Skinks were shouting. His warriors added to the din with their bellows. Yaolt climbed slowly to his feet and took in his surroundings. Most of the remaining warriors were clustered around the narrow entrance to the Chamber of Tranquility. Behind him he could hear the shrill hoots of a fleeing skink. He ignored the coward. The crowd around the entrance parted and one of the Emerald skinks pushed through carrying a small golden casket. Suddenly a bright lance of pure light scored the masonry of the entrance.

“Kill the intruders!” Yaolt roared.

He surged forward forgetting where he fought. His foot came down on what felt like a loose stone and suddenly the floor gave way. His saurus gaped in wonder has their leader was swallowed by the floor. Then a cloud of dust shot up from the hole along with the sound of a body hitting stone.

Xiuhpilli.
The priest heard a crash to the rear as he shot another arrow into the darkness. He flinched wondering if the ceiling had given way behind him. A quick glance told him that someone had blundered into the central pit trap, so much for luring the warm-bloods into that. He quietly said a quick prayer to Tzunki for patience and wisdom when dealing with fools and clods.

“Honored Chac hold the warm-bloods here for 20 heartbeats,” Xiuhpilli ordered. “Under-leader Matlal guard One Emerald Three and the cask. One Emerald Three keep the south side of the corridor, but move with caution.”

His orders issued the priest hurried to the edge of the pit to see who had fallen in. His curious gaze was met by a glare from the battered totem warrior.

“A rope or a spear shaft if you please, Esteemed Priest,” growled Yaolt from the bottom of the pit.

A javelin clanged off the floor by the priest’s left foot.

“A moment Valiant Yaolt.” Xiuhpilli turned and shot another arrow at the crowd of warm-bloods gathering near the chamber entrance. He hissed as he missed yet again.

“Aide him!” the priest ordered an unengaged saurus nearby.

Chac fell to the energy weapon. The skinks redoubled their fire with their bows, but one of the enemy warriors braved the arrows to stab the wounded Chac as he tried to rise. Chac fell back. But a rush of skinks and saurus drove the warm-blood back from his body.

Post Battle
The Guardians were able to get all of their treasures and the artifact off the board to win the game. Chac recovered from his injury. The 4 skinks who fled form the guardian spirits all returned unharmed as well. The Guardians of the Silent Places recover the Major Artifact the Plaque of Tepec.

The Azure Band suffer no casualties. (All but one henchwoman were trapped in snares, pits or cages, which forced the heroes to fight unsupported in the treasure chamber.) One warrior fled a guardian spirit but suffered no ill effects. Impressed with the performance of a Claw of the Old Ones, the Amazons acquire another.

Week 6—Ancient Treasures and Sudden Death
Part III
You’ve probably noticed the camera stayed home this past week. I’m not sure of its plans for this coming Thursday, but one can always hope.

“Skirmish”
The Amazons capture Valten Von Carstein!

The Evil Doers quickly traversed the leagues of jungle separating Naufragio Cala from the ruins of Axlotl. Valten was determined to outmaneuver the hated Melderzhus by reaching a major treasure trove before the Necrarch. Instead the Evil Doers ran into a skink patrol in the dark streets of Axlotl. The struggle alerted the Azure Band who were camped nearby.

The skinks were outnumbered and out fought in the darkness. Once the lizardmen were defeated, Valten found himself confronted by the warriors of the Azure Band. He also found out what a Claw of the Old Ones could do to a Vampire. Valten was struck down and spirited from the field by the crafty Amazons. His minions fought hard to recapture him, but failed. They did force the Amazons to abandon their plans to sacrifice a vampire to Rigg by inflicting heavy casualties on the retreating women. Instead Bergdis ransomed Valten back to his minions for the paltry loot that the ill-starred raid had garnered.

Post Battle.
The victorious Evil Doers part with a Lucky Charm and the rest of Valten’s possessions plus 50 gold for a ransom. Nick-Knee the ghoul is promoted for exceptional service against the Amazons. (The Evil Doer’s dregs apparently brought rubber swords to the fight…)

The defeated Amazons lost a henchgirl, but the ransom helped them double their income for the fight. Yet another Claw of the Old Ones is acquired.

“X Marks the Spot”
A Search for Hidden Treasure in the ruins of Itzachalowbai.

The priest Xiuhpilli set froth on another expedition into the ruins of Itzachalobai. He had with him a two-legs warm-blood map of the ruined port and the warm-blood water-houses that had wrecked there. The Venerated Lord Chacahlt was certain that one of the lost artifacts looted by the Blood Drinker Harr-Kon was to be found in the area.

The Guardians began their search on a mist-shrouded morning. Xiuhpilli had hoped to use the bright light of the Golden One to confound the servants of Darkness. Instead the Dragon Folk found themselves inching along in dense mist. The mist changed the landscape and distorted the sounds of the surrounding ruins. The priest knew that his patrol was not alone.

His fears were realized when the shapes of warm-bloods were glimpsed in the ruins. Arrows were exchanged with the Living minions of the Blood Drinkers. Yaotl roared with fury and rushed into the mist to engage one of the undead two-legs. The maddened totem warrior hacked the walking corpse to pieces but could not destroy it immediately. Finally Yoatl’s star metal sword separated the thing’s head form its shoulders and it collapsed. As it fell mocking laughter was heard from all around the Dragon Folk. Then the Guardians noticed that the minions of the Blood Drinker had disengaged and faded back into the mist.

When Xiuhpilli finally reached the location of the supposed treasure trove the crypt was open and empty. Whatever it contained had been found by others while the mist and the undead delayed the true servants of the Old Ones.

Post Battle.
The Shadow Stalkers win by store closing. One zombie held up Yoatl and the rest of the band in a narrow passage between the 2 ruined Warhammer towers while Nothma the Thrall found the treasure and began moving it off the board. The store closed before the treasure reached the board edge but Chadwicc's warband had possession and he passed his rout test. Next time.

The Shadow Stalkers gain light armor, gems and gold. They also find a cache of 3 daggers (the Lustrian Exploration chart is a bit lame.) All the zombies and waifs recover from their injuries.

The Guardians gain the benefit of a full compliment of heroes for the first time in the campaign, so they do well despite the loss.

Week 7--Girl Power!

Before last night the Amazons had won 1 game out of 12. As losses mounted Smalls had slowly increased the size of the band, kept his heroes mostly out of harms way (except the oft injured Totem Warriors) and acquired some of the Old Ones' gadgets the Amazons have access to. Then on a bitter cold Indiana night he caught some breaks.

Duel on the High Seas I
A Tale of Piracy, Kidnap and Ransom in which the Amazons Catch a Strange Fish

Melderzhus kept a firm mental clamp on the zombie who had the helm while directing the skeletons manning the guns to reload. The enemy guns spoke again. There was a crash as the hulk he rode suffered another hit.
"Bring her about!" the vampire shouted aloud even as the zombie turned the ancient wheel in response to his metal goad.
The female mortals were trying to board him with a jolly boat while the larger vessel battered his ship with its guns. Such tactics worked against mortal merchants, but Melderzhus marveled that anyone would be so foolish as to try them against one of Luthor Harkon's hulks.
The ancient vessel swung abeam. Too late the women rowing toward him realized that the larger ship was going to intercept their small craft. There were shrill screams followed by a satisfying CRUNCH. Melderzhus was thrown off his feet. The human witches had lured him onto a reef! He sprang to his feet and rushed to the starboard rail. The little boat was damaged but it was still afloat. Its crew waved their weapons and shouted foolish boasts.
In answer Nothma sprang from the bow of the hulk onto the sluggish jolly boat. The thrall's battle cry choked off as a female warrior wearing a ridiculous horned helmet spitted Nothma on a shining sword that crackled with energy. A zombie that had leapt with the thrall tried to pull itself aboard the boat as sinister fins surfaced from the roiling seas.
Melderzhus had his own boat lowered. Most of his Living servants were crammed into the jolly boat. They brandished sword and spear and loosed a ragged volley of arrows at the women in the crippled boat.
Melderzhus pushed his Undead servants forward. He kept one gun crew at the larboard gun, but he had little hope that they could do anything until he could free the ship.
The Shadow's jolly boat grappled the crippled enemy. Melderzhus remained aboard the hulk to read curses from the pages of the Damned Book. His sorcerous aide was not enough. His minions were easily routed by two screaming harridans with crackling swords of power.
Another round shot slammed into the stern.

Post Battle
The Shadow Stalkers strike their colors with 4 heroes OOA. Nothma recovers from his wounds but Red Stephen is captured. The acolyte Lamar II is never seen again. Stephen is ransomed for 50 gold and a Lucky Charm.

The Azure Band win their second victory of the campaign. They gather much treasure from the hulk as well as the ransom. Smalls serves notice that he is 'even' with the undead warbands. From now on captured characters end up on Rigg's altar at the Fortress of Darkness.

YAAARRR!! A fine tale of the seas matey! The Almost-Mer-Maids did a grand job of luring the undead onto the reef. Almost siren-like in their fiendishness.

Thank'ee Adm'rul. thank'ee. The Amazons have become a force to be reckoned with and that's a fact.

Quote :
The man known as Lamar woke on an unknown beach. His hands gripped the tattered rigging of a broken spar. The tide had brought him to land. Slowly he forced his hands to relax their grip, his legs to move. He got his feet under him and slowly rose from the sands. His clothes, skin and hair were grimed with salt, sand and seaweed. He had life, he needed food and fresh water to sustain it. Only the jungle could supply his needs. He staggered toward the green curtain.

Lamar was many things, but he was not a man of the wilderness. He took no notice of the tracks that had ringed his resting place at a distance. He barely heard the coughing call of the hunting beast over the pound of the surf. Still the instinct for preservation alerted him to the beast's charge. He turned to meet it. He even fumbled his weapons from his belt.

The tide washed his bones back to the sea.

Week 7—The Lizardmen Challenge the Zombie Pirates

“Duel on the High Seas II”
Xiuhpilli Robs some Thieves

Xiuhpilli ordered the concealing branches to be pushed aside. A canoe filled with skink braves rowed into the channel until the towrope grew taunt. Then the saurus leaned into long poles and the great House On Water glided from its hiding place along the coast. An alarm bell began to ring on the distant Black Ship as a lookout earned his keep. The great sails belled as the wind hit them abeam.

The Blood Drinkers had begun using the sea to transport their loot from the city of Axlotl rather than the more dangerous jungle. Today the priest hoped to make them reanalyze the risks.

Xiuhpilli felt the ship move into the deeper water. He swung the helm to bring the Engine of the Gods to bear and to give the Leaping Cloud the wind. A fountain of steam erupted well short of the enemy craft. The priest rapidly redid his calculations as the black ship came about and a Thunder Hollow roared. The iron ball splashed next to the Leaping Cloud’s hull just as the wind shifted. The Leaping Cloud slowed just as its enemy’s sails belled before a favorable wind.

Robbed of the speed he had sought, the priest guided the ship behind a convenient island. His target was obscured, but he was hidden from the Thunder Hollow as well. Xiuhpilli avoided the shallows and brought the ship around the island. A small boat full of warm-blood-two-legs was rowing frantically for the small island as the Black Ship loomed up behind them. The priest realized that the boat contained minions of the Blood Drinkers and their haste was to avoid his ship rather than escape the Black Ship. Xiuhpilli ordered the Engine to target the boat. He was rewarded with a direct hit. The small craft stayed afloat but it wallowed low in the water. The priest reckoned a quarter of the enemy force was now out of the fight.

The Black Ship loomed closer. Along her rails undead and living two-legs readied weapons and grappling lines. Xiuhpilli gave thanks that the enemy would board them right at the point that he had massed his best warriors. Chac, Matlal and Yaotl shook their weapons and roared their glee. Then the two ships crashed together. Chac cut the legs out from under the first warm-blood over the rail. Matlal roared in fright as a zombie pirate clawed at his eyes. The disoriented saurus blundered into Yaotl. Then one of the misshapen warm-bloods was amongst the skink braves who manned the Engine of the Gods.

Xiuhpilli felt the pressure of hostile magic. He chanted the words of the Old One’s Protection, but he saw Chicomecoatl stuck down by the attack well outside the zone of the spell’s protection. Xiuhpilli felt he had failed, but could not think how. As Chicomecoatl fell, the Blood Drinker leapt from his ship to attack One Emerald Six, who bravely guarded his chief’s body. Chac moved past the body of the two-legs he had downed and met the rush of the rest of the warm-blood boarding party on the bow of their own ship. His halberd rose and fell with murderous efficiency. Matlal regained his wits and cut the zombie in half. The momentum shifted solidly in the Guardian’s favor.

Post Battle
Valten fails his first rout test again. In this case it might have been a good thing since the frenzied Yaolt was about to board the Black Ship and Chac had already cut down half the cannon crews. Despite losing their cargo, all of the Evil Doers casualties recover except for one dreg who suffers the Old Battle Wound. The Evil Doers replace casualties suffered in other battles and replenish their stock of Lucky Charms.

The Guardians gain the Black Ship’s cargo and a hefty income from exploration as well. I remember that the Skink Priest carries the Plaque of Tepec, which would have helped against hostile magic with a 5+ dispel. (Doh!)
