I don't use dark souls? The immunity to psychology is nice but I think Brethren give much better support to the beastmen once I've maxed the number of them available. It may be in that I'm fortunate to be the one doing most of the fear causing rather than having it caused upon me but an undead warband may be changing that (at least when they get sent a new vampire - my possessed is picking the last one out of its claws Cool )

I only ask as I've got a couple of Mantic games ghouls as a freebie and having assembled them think they'd make good dark souls as they have the right crazed sacrficial play thing look to my mind.

Not odd at all, there are some possessed players in our group and neither of them uses darksouls as well...

Most of the henchmen choises are first the beastmen and then the brethren...

Agreed. Although, there are some cases that the Dark Souls are good. (I'm running a Sylvania campaign right now... when everything causes fear, the Dark Souls are suddenly much better.)

Fear is a good ability in one off games, but in Champagnes it's not as good as more characters gain immunity to fear, and higher leaderships.

So in one off games the fear immunity makes Dark Souls better then they are in Champagnes. Most of the Possessed Warbands I have seen Get as many Beastmen as they can, then Brethren then as last resort Dark Souls.

I think that fear is an over priced skill/ability and in Champagnes it really shows.

Realistically Fear has 2 functions,
1. If you fail your leadership test, you cannot charge a model with fear. Meaning that the model basically loses their action for the turn, and it is pretty likely that they will charge you on their turn.

2. If you are charged and you fail your leadership test you can only hit on a 6. If you already have a low enough Weapon skill you might already be needing a 5+ to hit so it’s not that much of a loss, also most things with fear are undead, so if they don’t kill you on the charge, and you don’t kill them on the attack back then more likely then not you will have a higher Initiative and you will strike first as normal for the next round. So it can screw-up attacks or bonuses that only work on the first round of combat like flails, but for most models it won’t matter as much.

Yeah, but that first point (can't charge) is a HUGE bonus at times. It means that 1/3rd-1/6th of the people charging your model cannot, which helps break down any numbers advantage your opponent might have started with. Not only that, but 6s to hit WS2 zombies is not too shabby.

Darksouls are a poor choice both stat wise and rules wise. Since the Possessed can bring their own fear causers to the fight there is not much need for them. Fear must be stronger in the captiol (which given DC's crime rate and the prevalence of Congressmen I can understand.) Cool
