I'm working on my next Rotten Belle for Malifaux, and I've decided I want her to have Blonde hair. I'm used to painting demons and other things that don't even HAVE hair... so I'm curious as to how to go about painting blonde hair on a model.

I was going to use a yellow and drybrush some lighter yellow or white on it, but I'm not sure that's the best way to go about it. Blonde hair is weird because it's not exactly yellow...

Try a search on the forum, I think we already had a thread like this a while ago.

Forum search for "blonde" only brings up this post. Sad

Search for "hair" only turns up this post and one about red hair.

Note the colors I use are Americana, I'm not sure what if any G.W. paints would match up. I start with a base of Marigold; wash with Burnt Sienna; dry brush with the Marigold; AND a final light dry brush with Golden Straw. Painting Blonde Hair? Fresse

I start with a basecoat of Snakebite Leather followed by a mix of snakebite and sunburst yellow
then a highlight of sunburst yellow followed by a highlight of a mix of dheneb stone (or bleached bone) and sunburst yellow.

on a centre piece model I suggest you add more layers in between for a smoother transition. You might want to add a litlle Snakebite to all the mixes to keep the colours natural

I drybrush from bubonic brown to bleached bone on a snakebite leather basecoat. Works nicely.

I'll second that Snakebite Leather is a good starting point, and working your way up through bubonic brown to sunburst yellow (perhaps with a bit of bleached bone for a final highlight) is a good way to go. It gives a much more "natural" blonde than just using straight yellows would.

Thanks guys. Smile I've got a full base coat on this model, and I used snakebite leather for the hair as a base. I'll be drybrushing various shades of lighter/yellower colors until I reach a good look. Pictures will be up soon hopefully.

That's a good question, and I've been wondering it myself. Glad I picked up Snakebite Leather the other day. I'll be giving this a try as well.

I ended up going with a Snakebite leather
base coat, and drybrushing lighter and lighter mixes of Snakebite
Leather and Sunburst Yellow (I think that's what the yellow was called,
anyway).

It turned out pretty well, I think. It's a darker, dirty blonde, but I
like it. I'll post up pics as soon as I finish the model. Smile

I avoid yellow paints - yellow hair is not exactly blonde hair.

So I use:
bubonic brown (citadel) + tan-earth (vallejo, but you can use graveyard earth from citadel)
wash with charred brown (vallejo, but you can use scorched brown)
bubonic brown + tan-earth
bubonic brown + tan-earth + bonewhite (vallejo... something like bleached bone)
bonewhite
bonewhite + white

anyone remember the old GW leprous brown ?
base coat
very thin wash with brown ink
leprous again
working up by adding white (not too much)
leprous brown wash (with or without a bit of darker brown)

be sure to keep the washes very very thin !
better 5 thin washes than 1 too thick

think my avatar had a simplified version of this (was done 15 years ago Painting Blonde Hair? Icon_lol )

Yeah you start with a light brown and then add lighter and more Yellow dry brushing until you get the desired color.
