PostSubject: Orcs+Goblins with a splash of troll   Orcs+Goblins with a splash of troll Icon_minitimeWed 21 Jul 2010 - 16:48

Hi guys, first post here heh. Long time 40k player getting into mordheim, got hit with a bit of that greenskin fever.
Have a house rule that states that a warband isn't required to make a routing test until 50% is taken out of action(but
can optionally rout at 25% or less). Keeping this in mind I thought this rule would be the best way to take a troll in my
warband to start. Threw together a list which I thought could use some critiquing.

Heroes

1 Boss----------105
base-80
helmet-10
sword-10
axe-5

1 Shaman-------50
base-40
bow-10

2 Big 'Uns-------96
base-40
axe-5
club-3

Henchmen

1 Troll------------200
base-200

1 Boyz-----------28
base-25
club-3

1 Goblins--------20
base-20
shortbow-5

Total------------------------------499

A bit of reasoning behind some of my choices. Maxed out my hero choices, didn't want to skimp on the gear for them.
Decided to go with the 1 boy for the chance of lads got talent. Decided the goblin could just chill with the shaman and be a cost effective shooter whom I can feed to the troll if needed. Those are my thoughts feel free to comment. Quick question about the orc hero special skills it says "Orc Heroes may use the following Skill list instead of any of the standard Skill lists available to them" i'm not entirely sure what this means i assumed each hero could chose one of the skills, but what needs to be replaced i don't get it.

Ooo a LoL player whats your username? more to the point tho, the shamen can either shoot or cast a spell each shooting phase(or thats how i play it anyway), and i would also give him a melee weapon just in case and the troll might open up the discussion of troll, ratogre, minotaur again but i can remember what we decided on so ill leave that for another forumer.

Hmm, your right the bow would be kinda useless on the shaman. Seeing as clubs are really useful i'm thinkin i'll swap the boss's axe with a club, toss a club on the shaman, and toss the bow on the boy. Then i'd break even at 500 with a third ranged.
I'll call em Krunk's Klubbaz haha. BTW my LoL tag is the same as my forum tag.

Taking a Troll in a starting warband is risky, because you can afford almost no henchmen that can advance to become heroes. But if you want to go down that road your list is not bad - i would only try to change the gobbo for an orc because that way you double your chances of getting another hero. And with your low numbers you really can not afford to have that gobbo roll "lad´s got talent" and die because he is no orc Orcs+Goblins with a splash of troll Icon_wink . With more henchmen this is at least somewhat less painfull, so try to build up your numbers fast.

Agree with Horatius. Risky, but could prove mighty at the start.

Also, my LoL tag is TheFigment

The nice thing about Troll is that they can never die from injuries. I think that it is risky though.

Agreeing with Rudeboy - a troll is a safe investment, especially compared to other large creatures. Go with the troll!

Nothing needs to be replaced, the hero just has the option to choose from the Special Skills list when it has the opportunity to choose a skill. Thus, when doing so, it is NOT choosing from another skill list.

Troll-I always start with one. I start with 2 orc boyz as well though, the goblin is a complete waste because if it goes OOA it only counts as 1/2 a model meaning you would have to lose 3 models before you could rout.

50% rout test. Game balance wise this is not a good rule as it makes Skaven/Beastmen much better at the beginning and throughout the campaign.

That is a lot of points tied up in one model. He can't die, so in that way he is a better investment than other large models, but he can be rendered effectively useless if the Boss goes OOA. A few years back we had a player running an orc warband with a troll - we learned to avoid attacks on the troll, but to whack the Boss as soon as possible, which meant the troll spent the rest of the game Stupid. We got pretty good at waxing the Boss quickly. Of course, all of the warbands were experienced - it might be harder for young warbands to target a specific model so readily.

Really the main downside I see is that with the orcs starting with only four heroes, their exploration rolls are poor - they need new heroes as soon as possible. The 200 gc for the troll could buy a fair number of potentially promotable orcs!

Still, I haven't ever actually seen anyone start with a troll, and it might work pretty well. Von Kurst has tried it, and it seems to work well for him.

The leader and the troll have to stick together. If the enemy realize that the leader is key to eliminating the threat, then ya gotta get cunning with the plan. Smile

Its all about making the troll the focus of the enemy's shooters and fighters. If they succeed, oops, the troll's all better after the game. If they fail, they lose. At the start of a campaign a troll can fight a good 4 or 5 enemies without breaking a sweat. And heroes can rush in and claim experience from knocked down and stunned enemies.

All resources should be spent on new boyz until there are 6 heroes, then you can branch out and really start to make the world GREEN.

The more I think about this set-up the more I don't like it.

Sure the Troll will never die, but he will never get any better.

I think you would be better of getting some cheap goblins, and squigs, as well as some Orc boys. The boys will cost you less, and you can LGT them into heroes.
