Step Aside. With weeping blades you might want to consider Expert Swordsman. Tail Fighting works well in conjunction with Expert Swordsman. Mighty Blows can give that extra punch and allow him to wound on 2+ against probably more than half of the models he may encounter. Make sure you get him a helmet, lucky charm, and rabbit's foot, and also seriously consider a holy/unholy relic.

I tend to first choose Strike to Injure for my melee heroes, but in this case I agree with sartori's suggestion - Expert Swordsman. Given his speed, he's going to charge more often than not.

Overall, I think the major weakness with your warband is that you got carried away buying the really expensive (but nice!) kit for heroes, and didn't recruit enough verminkin. As you have probably already discovered, once you have taken 25% or more casualties, the skaven pretty much always rout immediately. Beefing up your numbers increases the number of casualties you can afford before having to make the rout check you are going to fail. Plus, skaven always work best when you outnumber your enemy and can gang up on them.

I recommend either strike to injure or mighty blow depending on your preferences, both are very good. With his WS your leader will hit most opponents on a 3 anyway, so he does not need a boost there that much. Additionally both strike to injure and mighty blow will work all the time - not only when you charge.
I would give the 2h club to a black skaven. That way he can choose what weapon to use depending on his opponent - and he has a bigger chance to wound and get some XP.
Mweaver is right by the way, you need more verminkin .

I don't take Expert Swordsman on a Weeping Blades-wielding rat just for the boost to hitting stuff, it also helps to get that magic `6' for an auto-wound. I do agree on the Strike to Injure suggestion though! Also, you haven't seen my rolling. A 3+ for me might as well be a 5+ Smile

I have played Skaven for many years and played against them just as long. This is strictly my opinion and what works for me. First off, the strategy of skills and weapons is different for each playerís style and table set up. My group tends not to pack a table anymore with buildings and ruins. So we tend to have some open space and/or a Town Square. So any Warband will usually have long ranged weapons. This being said, My Assassin and Night Runners usually get Weapons Expert, and Long Bows. I donít spend the gold on Weeping Blades, I hardly get the 6 needed. Standard swords do just as good for me. In Warbands where I want my Assassin for HtH, I go with Strength and Combat skills, I like Strike to Injure, Mighty Blow, Resilient, and Tail Fighting for the +1 Attack. In other Warbands, Iíve made my Assassin into a ranged combatant. Then Iíd go with Shooting skills including Weapons Expert. I turn my Night Runners into Snipers (all shooting skills) and they hardly ever see any HtoH combat. The Black Skaven, are my HtH Fighters, Fighting Claws, Tail fighting, mighty blow, resilient, ect.

I see you have Warplock Pistols on several models. They have a short range, but really good in the first round of combat. Hard to beat that S5.

Generally, in your case, I see you need more slings. Everybody gets a sling. If you canít reach HtH, SHOOT! And definitely more Verminkin. They are good fighters and and great Pawns. If you canít afford a Verminkin, get a Giant Rat. They are great Fodder! Put them in front and let them get charged first, then Skaven charge in next.

So far, this strategy hasnít failed me. The only real penalties to Skaven are lower Leadership and lack of availability to Hired Swords/Dramatis Personae.

i agree with allmost all the tips so far, but i have to say, I have a habit of playing a bit on the defensive with my hero's skills, and so allways end up taking step aside.
expert swordsman is awesome.

so in effect i guess im just saying i agree with these guys!

Step aside is a nice skill. I do tend to grab offensive skills before defensive ones, though (for all warbands, not just Skaven).

The other posts give great advice so I'd just repeat - get as many verminkin as you can. They have a good stat line and are only 25 gc with a club and sling. I would suggest downgrading the equipment you've given yoru verminkin in favour of buying more verminkin. The club, dagger and sling combo is a bargain and is pretty effective. Only when you have lots more troops (at least 15 in the warband) would I consider equipping your verminkin better. You might also like to put them in henchman groups of 2 or 3 so you can still make lots of advance rolls and then recruit to the henchman gropup with the best advances. Even late ina campaign when you have a full warband roster, shots from 13 henchmen's slings can be devastating.

I agree with Dave, more verminkin and slings always end up working better for me than a few models equipped nicely. I haven't been playing mordheim very long, but my first warband or two was always smaller numbers, which aren't good for skaven. I tend to not use giant rats in favor of more verminkin now, but I'mprobably just using them wrong.

Verminkin earn experience, and can potentially be promoted (which helps if a hero has snuffed it). Rats never get better. The verminkin are a better option, in my opinion, unless you are playing one-off games.

Verminkin are far better than giants rats. They have a decent profile (except for LD), can gain experience and can use equipment. A verminkin with a sling and club (missile weapon, 2 hth attacks) for 25gc is a pretty good deal. I'd only use rats if you like them fluff-wise or if you get them free with Children of the Horned Rat. Its a good spell - it always works and gives you more troops.
