| So today I got a can of matt varnish to spray on my clan Pestilens skaven which already had a gloss coat for protection. Anyway I spray it on and almost immediately it turns the miniatures white, I've heard people calling it "fogging". After a short barrage of curse words I grab the gloss varnish and spray the models with that again. the "fogging" disappeared thank god, but the mini's are still shiny.
The matt varnish I used is from Windsor and Newton, (but it's not new as I got it from my father who stopped painting and bought this maybe a year ago). Even though it's quite rainy here in the Netherlands I sprayed it indoors and put a hairdryer on the miniatures to provide dry air.
I have ordered a can of Testor's dullcote but i've herd that has been taken off the shelves in Europe so I will be surpirsed if that's ever delivered.
What kinds of matt varnish do you guys use?

| Testor's Dullcote which they reformulated to remove nasty ingredients banned by the EU. | |

| I use Krylon Matte Finish & recently Testor's Dull Coat as a final finish. The key elements to getting the spray to work well is to shake the can until your arm is about to fall off; spray from a distance of about 1', NEVER spray when it's raining or the temperature is either too high or too low...the hair dryer could be the main culprit in the foggy effect. | |

| okay I'll try again when my Testor's Dullcote arrives, on a test mini mind you. - DeafNala wrote:

Actually I used the hairdryer after it became foggy, so it helped me get rid of the effect, so maybe it's still too humid to spray?

| Wise words from Deaf, but he forgot the parts about spraying in a sweep starting before, and finishing past, the miniature; wearing odd socks and keeping the fingers on your left hand crossed at all times | |

| Well I tried it again because it's a shame to let a full can of varnish go to waste. I tried the shake thing and the light spray thing on a test miniature and so far so good, I have to let it dry some more.

| best thing to do before spraying, is spray a bit into the air (seriously ) this gets rid of any old cllutter in the nozzle, and prevents fogging particles from spraying onto the model. the sweep is a must, and also, the thin coats. if it gets thick, it colors white, just like water effects do. | |

| The citadel purity spray does exactly the same if you apply too thick a coat. I've found two light coats does a much better job than one heavy coat. | |
