Scenarios for one player? Empty
PostSubject: Scenarios for one player?   Scenarios for one player? Icon_minitimeWed 16 Jun 2010 - 20:18

Hi!

Me and my friends have just started playing Mordheim after trying to start any kind of skirmish game for quite a while. So far we really like the game, and all problems with the rules are easily discussed until we've reached a good answer. For example, the person in our group who plays merceneries was not so good at playing so after reaching the membercap we all decided that she could use 2 more henchmen until she grasped the rules and became a bit smarter (the rest of us are use to playing competetive games like this, she is not).

Anyway, on to the reason for my posting. One of our members have fallen behind the rest of us experience and equipmentwise thanks to bad rolling. He's used to playing so we've decided against just giving him stuff to help him get back to our level. Instead I've written a scenario where his warband (Witch Hunters) are trying to kill a vampire in his coffin before the sun sets, avoiding or killing the ghouls and skeletons on their way. If he manage this there will be one more scenario (which I haven't written yet) and after that he can collect his reward. This seems like a fair and fun way to let him catch up.

I just want to know if there are other people who written scenarios like this one, and where I can find them? If you want me too, I can of course post my scenario here as well.

Welcome to the forums!

It sounds as though you and your friends have a good grasp on the spirit of the game. A solo type of scenario is pretty rare although I used to dabble in such things during story campaigns.

Please do post your scenario here.

One scenario that works fairly well is "The Gauntlet" by Erik Johnson. Published in TC#21 pp. 19-21. if you have access to Town Cryers. The Gauntlet is pretty much the warband against random traps until they reach the treasure chamber.

Another article that might be of some help is "The Foulness Below" also in TC although I forget where exactly.

Cheers!

This type of situation has come up in my group a long time ago. The Goal is to have enough difficulty to be a proper game without just giving reward away. I had written, and since lost it, an easy “random” type scenario for those who missed games. I took several pieces for other scenarios and mixed them together. It had a small story about a lost item which was hidden in area/building (within 2x2 foot area in the center of the table), which had a reward to retrieve. Kind of like the Treasure Hunter scenario, where you have to search buildings. The reward, I think, was a Shard or 2d6 gold, or something. The random part was the monsters and creatures in the way. These would be played and controlled by other players. This is the fun part. I had a random D6 chart similar to this: (These creatures would be placed randomly on the field before Warband player deploys) Roll D3+1 times on this Chart

1- Zombies: 2D3 Zombies, these zombies just move around randomly, use scatter die. Until they can charge. BRAINS!

2- Wild Dog Pack: 2D3 Wardogs, They’re fierce and hungry. Use scatter die the move randomly. The dogs are hunting for food and will not be more than 6 inches away from each other as the move

3- Chaos spawn: 2D3 Chaos Spawn. Use normal rules for these.

4- Monster Hunt Creature: Randomly roll which Monster is in the area/table. This monster has no Horde as it is young and still looking to make one. Use scatter die to move as its searching for treasure. OR Thing in the Ruins! (Use Thing in the Woods Model) Use rules as normal. It’s hungry and looking for food. It’ll eat anything alive with in Charge range, (including other creatures on this list, except Zombies) Roll Odd or Even to determine which.

5- Possessed!: (this is fun) make a Possessed Model. Roll D3 Mutations and Randomize the Mutation’s Chart. Then roll 4 experience advancements, re-roll “New Skill” He’s to crazed to learn skills. Use a scatter die to move 2d6 up to it’s max movement. He will charge as normal. If any aggressive action is taken towards the Possessed he will run towards the aggressor until he can attack the aggressor or any Warband member within charge range along the way. Meaning, if he was shot at, he will move towards that shooter.

6- RATS!: 3D6 Giants Rats. They’re fierce and hungry. Use scatter die the move randomly. The Rats are hunting for food and will not be more than 6 inches away from each other as the move. The rats are worth ½ XP per kill.

This is just an Idea, not any hard and fast rules. This can be modified to suit your needs. The point of it is to have 1 player who missed a game(s), and another play NPCs that another player could play without have to spend the time making another Warband just for one game.

With our gaming group we never actually do anything special to let the warband in 'last' catch up...There are some special benefits for being the least powerful warband to allow catching up.

A good thing that has happened in my gaming group is that the warband with the lowest rating got to choose a scenario. He chose the scenario that pitted all the warbands up against a warband of his choice - thus allowing him to share a victory with the other warbands if they came out on top.

To us, this is the nature of the game. We play not to win, but to have fun and pull off some amazing stuff. If someone falls behind - that's Mordheim for yah! Razz

I can't remember what the name of the scenario was, but I seem to recall that one of the ones over at http://tabletopgeeks.com/downloads/ was written for solo or multiplayer.

Regardless, if nothing else maybe some ideas to be had there.

My brother's "Escape from Mordheim" scenario was originally written for multiple warbands playing (more or less) collaboratively, but I have also used it for solo games when testing new warbands.

http://hobbyblog.wargameweaver.com/mordheim

It is a lot of fun. I do play with a variant where I randomly place three corpses on the table, and the fleeing warband counts as winning only if they search each of the three bodies and then make it off the board before routing. I worked a small table for random rolls when you search a body:

2 Ghoul*

3-4 Zombie*

5-6 d3+1 gold

7 d6 Gold

8-9 d6 + 2 gold

10+ Wyrdstone Shard

*Roll again after the creature is taken out of action; re-roll results of 2 through 4.

AHHH that was the site I was actually thinking of!

Fun scenario BTW. We actually played resetless dead last weekend with 3 of us.

By the 4th turn we had a pack of 5 skeletons, 6 Ghouls, and 6 zombies

It started to look really ugly till 2 of the 3 players routed.
