Sometimes you don't want terrain pretty so much as you want it now.

well that's cheap, fast and easy to make, practical and playable for sure!
Are you planning on adding texture and paint to your buildings?

Well placing this in the Gallery section reminds me of Marcel Duchamps. What you did isn't a high-quality piece of terrain but by grasping something easily available and turning it into playable terrain with a minimum of effort you made something beautifull in my eyes!

I also love your heading!

You know I thought about adding textured plaster and paint but its kind of a lot of work and the results aren't that spectacular, but I hope to take time for nicer buildings later.

I think the time and effort invested on the scenery pieces is worth it at the end mate.

Though those cardboard building look promising as "Work In Progress".. adding some balsa wood or other pieces of cardboard to give the buildings more volume and detail make it look great and without much effort and money expended, specially at the edge of each corner, the windows and door frames, etc...
You already made some roofing which looks nice, you could add some wooden popsticks to the floor to get the feeling ruin feeling, or cut little cardboard floor tiles and glue them to the bases, thats also cheap and easy.

For paint, just buy a can or two of texturized spray pain for the basing, and then just wash painting and some dry painting on top and thats it (to keep it short and quick, you could go deeper for better results). If you wanna go cheaper you can always whiteglue some ordinary sand and spray paint on top.

VERY NICE START! It has a LOT of potential & quick DOES NOT necessarily mean shoddy. Keep up the GOOD WORK! Hero's fabulous cardboard fabrications 544694

There is one little point:The Gallery is for finished pieces. As a WIP piece, this really belongs in the Scenery & Terrain section. If you have no objections that's where I'll move the thread. Hero's fabulous cardboard fabrications 73199

I'd rather skip any finish, and do some serious stuff later on – if one is not satisfied with cardboard-buildings as it is, which is absolutely fine by me ^_^.

That's what I was thinking. I mean if I want to do something nice I want it to last and that's when I bring out the foamcore and hardboard.

I think cardboard is a fine medium to use if you want to go cheap.

Most of the stuff I build for my gaming group is made of double layered cardboard, like what you used for your base. Of course there are cons with any material. I think that most people think of cardboard as warping. Personally I haven't had any problems with this using my current building method.

I use coffee stir sticks, and matchsticks I get from the local $.99 store and concrete patch to fill the holes. The end results produce a rock hard building that is VERY chip resistant and SUPER cheap to produce. One example can be seen here. WIP of Cardboard building.
