So I'm in the middle of making a board. It must fit my appartment so it will be 110 x 110mm (roughly 3.6 feet).
The solution will be some what special. I have divided the board into a grid of symmetric squares. 16 squares to be precise. These squares will be removable and I will attach the buildings to each squares. Some will use up two or even three squares.
Ok, so if your still in the blue, through me some questions and I will show you. Anyhow here's some sketches:

As you can see the board is divided into 16 squares. Each square is static, but can be combined in any way (roughly).

Here's a Guard House and just some normal living quarters

The Temple of sigmar, and some houses with a passage.

I'll up load some WIP's soon as well.
Enjoy

That's a very nice design. I really like the bell on the temple... I'm not sure why I didn't think of that before! Smile

Did you mean the Bell in the clock tower or the bell roof (the dome or what ever)?

The bell in the tower. Somehow that just never occurred to me until I saw your drawing. Smile

aha ^_^ well thanks anyway! imagine what one could do with that in game play also; A force of good, say sigmarite must reach the bell and ring it (strength test) before the chaotic Possessed destroys it (Strength test), or perhaps completes a heretic ritual. ^_^
Well the temple of sigmar will be on two of those squares anyway, so hopefully it will be quite big (probably like 440mm long and 270mm wide)

Oh I'm somewhere in between spontaniety and planning...

I like the standard size bases. Not only does it allow you to swap around the initial terrain pieces, but, as you add new ones, they'll easily integrate with the first batch. GOOD THINKING, Amigo! thumbsup

Exactly - also one of the main reasons that i did this was to get away from the feeling of a flat surface with buildings lying on top of it - here I can integrate the cobble stone pavements with the actual building. Hopefully it will turn out nice. Of course, some of the freedom will be limited. But everything has a backside right?
Thanks by the way!

What are you using as the bases? We're doing a very similar idea to this and we're using 1/2 styrofoam attached to 1/4" particle board as the base for all our pieces. The particle board keeps them sturdy, and the foam allows us to modify it as necessary, or even cut into it for rivers/sewage type stuff.

Here, maybe this will give you some ideas: http://www.tabletopgeeks.com/table-with-terrain-blocks/

You can actually make multiple size bases and as long as all of them are a multiple of the smallest base size you should be able to mix and match with no problems. We're using 6", 12", and 18" sides on our table. This way you can put the terrain together and never run into a situation where you can't fit any blocks. The worst case scenario is that you'll need to fill a gap with one of the 6" blocks.

Or you could stick with one size to make it easier. :-P

Well I will have a MDF-board (in two parts for easy storage) which well be helled together with good old duct board. The "squares" will be cut in foam cord, each with a small square cut out in the middle - the positive bit will then be glued on to the MDF-Board. So you just stick the big squares on to the small ones - which also solves another irritating problem - knocking around those bloody buildings as you move your models. ^_^

The idea with diffrent sizes seems interesting – though difficult. Razz
Though this must be somewhat what I meant with using two or three bases for the bigger buildings (such as the sigmar temple).

Sounds like a pretty cool idea. The "locking" idea is pretty cool. Good thinking! We decided to build our table and put a small lip around it so when you fill it up everything is packed nice and tight inside the table. I like your idea though, you can only fill up as much as you need and everything will still stay in place.

The different sizes thing that I mentioned is essentially what you just said... You have your base size, and you can use multiple bases for a bigger building.

I can't wait to see how this works out!

Aha, yeah, I had an idea with a lip as well... exactly, if you want a tighter board you just use less pieces.

I promise to post pics. Currently I'm building houses – I haven't gotten around buying the styrofoam I need.

So here's some WIP buildings, starting with a squarish nice little house:
https://servimg.com/view/13963247/15[url= https://servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=14&

u=13963247] https://servimg.com/view/13963247/14

https://servimg.com/view/13963247/13

This one has a part crossing the main building:
https://servimg.com/view/13963247/12

https://servimg.com/view/13963247/11

Stables:
https://servimg.com/view/13963247/10

This building will be accompanied by another, between them some stone steps. The ground level floor is not accessible, for the roof has fallen in and filled it up with rubble:
https://servimg.com/view/13963247/9

Somehow I imagined this storage room a lot smaller (in relation to the minis) when I built it: now it looks like quite a big shed:
https://servimg.com/view/13963247/8

All buildings need a lot of details, mainly wood, roofs (with tiles) and rumble and that kind of crap. I tend to build the walls first, and then go on so I can play some games while making progress on the board. Hope you like, and please feel free to criticize.

Here's a WIP church of sigmar. It is based on an asymmetrical octagon. Kind of. Well, it takes a hell of a time to finish. Some step-by-step:

That looks fantastic. I'd be worried about putting so much time in to something made of foam though. So delicate! Is the blue foam harder than the pink stuff?

I think it's the same, they're just different colors. but now days you are supposed to find foam with different colors.. but in the end its the same insulation foam.. it varies colors depending on the manufacturer.

And that's an awesome looking church.. I'm really jealous! keep us updated!

Although the color may vary from place to place, normally the blue is denser than the pink. Popmouth's Board Suspect

Stunning!

Do you happen to have any secrets to making the foam a bit more solid? I am working on a variety of similar projects and the best I know is to give it a coat or two of watered-down PVA glue (with or without texture, depending on preference). This isn't the best, but it does give it a bit of a shell that protects it from chips.

I may be copying your church design - it really looks awesome!

Very nice, Popmouth - thanks for sharing!

In the photographs, looking at the second photo of the "main building", it looks like it might be a little hard to reach your hand in to place or move a figure (unless there is more of an opening on the other side). You might want to experiment a bit moving figures about on the interior before painting.

@DeafNala: thanks, you always give the nicest of comments.

@Cygnus: Well, right now it just stands as it is, I will paint it eventually, though maybe it would be an idea to just prime it with some white glue or something like that...(?)

@Mweaver: Well, the other side will be far more ruined, and the roof will be cracked and open so that won't be to much of a problem.
If you notice, in the picture there's a mini always near by Wink.

Oh, and feel free to copy any design (or don't if you think their crap Razz). Copyright is for boring gits...
