I like the idea, a spellcasting ninja is kind of cool, but there are a few things missing.

First of all, he needs both a hiring and upkeep fee, and a list of which types of skills he can learn.

The spells need difficulties, although really I've never thought of putting ninjas and spellcasters together.

The spells also need to be clarified, and in some cases toned down a bit.

- Do fireball and lightning strike require a "to hit" roll?
- Does whirlwind affect friend and foe? Does it affect all models within 4"? In game terms, exactly what happens to the models affected? The impression I get is that any model within 4" is flung 18" directly away from the caster, stopping only if they hit a wall or another warrior. That is a very, very powerful spell. Probably too powerful. I'd be inclined to say that it affects all models within 2", friend and foe alike, and shoots them back more like 4".
- Blinding Sunlight is an interesting idea, but also way too powerful. 20" is just a huge range for a game like Mordheim. Drop it down to 12" or so. I would also allow them to move, but maybe not run or charge (otherwise it's more or less like immobilizing a bunch of guys for up to 3 turns).

The rating boost seems too high to me, I would lower him to 15-20.

Looks like a good start though! Sorry I don't have any ideas for the last two spells.

I like the concept of the Ninja, but I differ on the Magic aspect of it. I believe the Ninja didn’t use magic but the perception of it. With Special Skills and equipment, the Ninja can seem to be a magic user. That being said, I would go with special skills and equipment. Just some ideas on the fly here:

Smoke bomb: Range, self to 4 inches, cloud 3” diameter. Can be used to obscure opponent’s sight for and quick escape or possible attack. Perhaps, Ninja could use this to move up to 4 inches (free), into cover (Hiding), or a sneak around for a Back-Stab (free attack). The use of the smoke bomb counts as 1 attack or action in HtH. Probably, start each game with 3 bombs. Ninja makes these bombs.

Climbing claws: Either: “See skill Scale Sheer Surfaces.” Or “+1 to climb checks.” (drop the Rope and Hook idea unless it’ll be used as weapon also.

Skill: Move Silently: Ninja can run full movement, if movement ends in cover, Ninja can be declared Hiding.

Additional to weapons Listed, Swords and Stars, add Blowpipe and poisoned darts.

As the Ninja grows in experience I could skills like Scale Sheer Surfaces, Leap, Sprint, Dodge, and/or Combat Master just to name a few. Granted, these ideas are just on the fly, as food for thought.

I must agree to Shadowphx,
a magic wielding ninja doesn´t feel right.
The are assassins, silent killers no fireball using warlocks.

I would also say to go with skills and special equipment.
So smoke bombs for sneaking into cover, gas bombs to disillusionate the target (effect of stupidity), climbing claws, shuriken (throwing knives), kantana (sword), bow or short bow.

could a mod delete this topic please.
i know that a ninja is a assassin and that ninjas did not use magic but the perception of it, but it is the warhammer world, and magic is not real but warhammer wizards can use it. so why not ninja?????

Jack, no need to pull your thread. I think you are really on to something here. Bare with me a minute, and I’ll explain. I see these ideas actually running for a couple different Hired Swords. Perhaps, lets look at all the ideas listed here. Why not make a type of class of Imperial Assassins? I know the “name” has already been used. But why not different types of Assassins?

You first idea, for example, could work as an Imperial Wizard Assassin. Using magic and Weapons to elude Guards to kill target. Maybe, even add some Bounty Hunter rules to him.

The Ninja idea, using special weapons and stealth type skills to achieve the target kill. The model wouldn’t have to look as the classic Ninja. Ninjas, used Stealth and Disguise to move past groups of protectors or guards. Example: who would expect the cleaning man to be a cold blooded trained killer? So, the Assassin in disguise, walked right past the bodyguards with his weapons disguised as cleaning products, his Staff looks like a mop in a bucket. His sword, hidden in the sheath disguised as a broom handle. You get the idea.

You could use any model for this Character. Imagine, using the town folk model with the bucket on his foot and holding a fish. Who’s to say the fish isn’t hiding a knife? Does the crazy fool look like a lethal killer. Of course not. “Guys, leave that crazy fool alone.”, said Captain Smith.

Jack, don’t give up so early. You have a good base idea. Others can help come up with some fluff, cost, and who can hire. So please, post your original ideas again. Guys and Gals, let’s help Jack and hammer out some good Hired Swords. What do you say?

I'll second that the ninja with magic is not a bad idea. Realistic? No. But this is the Warhammer World interpretation of a ninja assassin, and most importantly it's your interpretation, so if you have a specific character type in mind then you should go for it.

I do think the "master of disguise/assassin mage" idea that Shadow brought up sounds pretty cool, too.

Also, as one last little thing - there is a precedence for ninjas using magic in fantasy. A number of turn-based-strategy and rpg-strategy video games have ninjas as a character class, and they almost always have some form of elemental magic at their disposal (Ogre Battle and Final Fantasy Tactics are the examples that come immediately to mind).

And I'll join Myntokk. It can work either way especially in a fantasy universe. Maybe this is a specialist ninja like the Clan Eshin Sorcerer only cooler and perhaps better thought out?

Either way Jack you have floated some good ideas and you can go several directions with them. We'll all pitch in our thoughts and opinions because that's what forums are for.

Cheers!
