Hi everyone,
I usually play Fantasy or Mordheim, but my new gaming group only plays 40k so I've decided to give it a go, the armies I will be fighting against are; Tyranids(mostly guants which a Hive Tyrant HQ), Chaos(Death Guard),Dark Eldar, Space Marines(Scouts and tanks), and last but not least are either Tau or Eldar(he cant chose).

I originally decided to play Necrons, but then changed my mind to Imperial Guard for the variety of units, and the fact I can change my army list easily depending on mission and the person I'm fighting that match, my base idea is to have lots of long range tanks(basilisks), bane wolfs for taking out the hordes of guants, and Valkyrie's for taking objectives and dropping troops behind enemy lines.

Anyway the reason I'm posting is to see if anyone has any advice to what upgrades to give my troops ect and what to look out for when fighting these armies.

Doc

For guard forces if your wanting a gunline give them meltas and autocannnio heavy teams and fire fro the chimeras.

I like running vet squads with 3 meltas or 3 plasmas, and command squads with 4 plasmas due to increased BS.

Vs hive tyrants you can pepper them with long range fire and if any MC's get close you pop them with the rapid firing plasma squads, a Company command squad with 4 plasmas and commander with plasma pistol isn't somethign to sniff at if it gets in 1 inches along with the chimera firing if possible.

my list runs with 3 hydras for popping light armour, a manticore for the hopes of 3 large blasts and 3 medusas along with 2 vandettas and 5 chimeras.

troops i've gone for vet squads with meltas and CCS with plasmas as mentioned above and I find it works in ruining anything at long range and upclose. mass firepower works Smile

For BS3 atocannons are a god send due to more dice and S7, and work for everythign listed above.

I agree with Duce... the IG are squishy, but having LOTS of them makes a difference. Put the guys with Meltas in Chimeras (transports) and put them close. This would take care of those Gaunts (with all the flamers) and big creatures (meltas). Make sure you have long range support.

I play Necrons... but they have been nerfed in 5th Edition.

I play Tyranids... but they ubber complicated them. Sorry... no funny poster.

As an alternative... you may try Death Squads, 40k skirmish we have been working on for over 2 years.
