I recently ordered a bunch of Depron foam and started in on a project.

I still have some shaping work to do on some of the walls (You will notice they are blank), but I thought I would share what I have done so far.

I initially wanted to use wood for the backing on the foam, but I suck so bad at cutting straight lines with a saw, and I work late at night when I get home from work when the wife and kid are asleep and it makes to much noise Current Building Project Icon_sad

Nice work so far! Get alittle more shaping done and some paint on this bad boy and it will be a mighty fine piece! Cant wait to see the finished product.

Looks great!

How about using foamboard as backing? It is less prone to warping when painted than the cardboard you are using now.

So I managed to get a little bit more work done on my project. I finished the shaping / carving of the walls, and took some better pictures. I think I am going to have to change up the base, as it is a bit to narrow. I started working on the roofs, and filling the gaps in the walls etc. last night but dont have updated pictures of that yet. I will take some more before I start in on the painting.

You can see more pictures here My Pbase Page

SPECTACULAR! AND that is the VERY first street lamp I've seen in Mordheim...a pretty snazzy one at that. The woodwork & the window treatment look GREAT. The multilevel adds a lot to the overall feel on your VERY NICELY DONE pieces. Keep up the EXCELLENT WORK. Current Building Project 544694

This is exactly how Mordheim terrain should look!

Can't wait to see it painted (most overused quote on these forums!) Current Building Project Icon_biggrin

How do you get such neat and even layer variations in the foam, for example: the stucco walls and stone door frames. Whenever i try this the foam is either way to lumpy or cracks. I have tried with foamboard after removing the card. You are using depron which does not have the card, so maybe the material handles better...

It typically takes a few passes with a dull pencil to get the detail deep enough, if you try in one pass or to fast you can tear the foam. The two tools I find the most handy are the back end of an exacto knife, used in a circular motion while I push the foam down, and a smooth rouned end of a clay shaper. ( I will post some pics)

I have used Foamboard without the paper and I can tell you the Depron is SOOOoooo much easier to use (At least compared to the cheap foamboard I was using). It has a better "memory" for lack of a better word. When you push it down, it stays down allowing for deeper details. Or at least that has been my expeirence.

On a side note, there are two sides to the depron. One smooth, and one that is a little rough. The Rough side is the side I personally prefer to use. The Smooth side is spongey (is that a word?) I will post an update on progress tomorrow.

PostSubject: A bit of an update here.   Current Building Project Icon_minitimeWed 18 Nov 2009 - 7:05

Sorry for the delay in an update, I have been side tracked with some other projects. I finished work on the buildings, added roofs, and some other details. I had to change the base though as it just seemed a bit narrow.

my WIP pics, and larger pictures can be seen here http://www.pbase.com/therat/cluster

I got a bit concerned that my lappost would break off, so I came up with the idea of mounting it on a post that would go through the platform its mounted on. That way I can remove it for storage. Its quite sturdy and doesn't move at all when inserted all the way down.

Current Building Project Medium

I had an empty corner that wasn't quite large enough to add another building to so I decided to add in a covered well.

I hope to have a bit more paint on it soon!

Soooooo sweeeeeet.

Man your skills with Depron are something to admire!

I may try to order the stuff online, as apparently in my country none knows what I'm talking about.

And now that you has started to paint them, the buildings show all their greatness.

The removable lamp is a very good idea too.

I like your foundations a lot. May I ask you how you did the stone (brick) work?

I usually score several parallel lines as a guide and fill with "carved" bricks, but I didn't see any continuos line in your bricks. Very attractive "random" appearance.

All in all, these are some of the best Mordheim scenery I've seen in a long time.

GOOD JOB!

Best wishes.

EXCELLENT PROGRESS! I can identify with getting side tracked; of course, with moi it's yet another sign of imminent senility. AND you can't rush a labor of love...good excuse there.
The Lamp mount is a good idea. With removable pieces I usually sink a tube into the foam if depth permits; then attach a smaller rod or nail to the piece that will fit snuggly into the tube.
Until just recently I hadn't heard of Depron. It sure holds all the LOVELY detail work you've done VERY WELL. The Well looks GREAT. This is looking to be a FINE Mordheim WORK OF WONDER. Time & distractions permiting, keep up the SPLENDID WORK! Current Building Project 544694

For the brick work I also make very faint parallel lines, but I do them approx 2-3x the height of the bricks I want. This gives me a rough guide to keep things on track, but from there I just do the bricks free hand. This gives me the ability to make larger block, or vertical bricks etc.

The Depron is interesting, I'm going to check it out. I have been reading up on stonework, and the basic idea behind making a rubble wall is that there are lifts every 18" or so; ie, a layer or line. The art is to break the line with taller stones every so often, to achieve the random look, but still have strength. So your technique for drawing the light guidelines is spot on.

This stuff is looking great!! Keep it up.

Been a little bit since I updated this project log. So here you go, some quick pictures of my progress. I still have more painting to do, and some bits and rubble to add in ..but so far I am liking the progress.

Try to over look the picture quality. I will post some better pictures when I get it fully complete.

Let me know what you think.
