PostSubject: Spell of Awakening   Thu 14 Jan 2010 - 10:24

So, I have searched the forum and I do not know of any FAQ sources, so I have no idea where anything aboit this may have been already written. That is why I post it. (if there is a thread about it already, feel free to show me the way and then the mods can dl this one).

And the question is concerning the Spell of Awakening for the undead. The spell states that an enemy Hero who died after the combat, is raised as a Zombie. He/she retains all equipment, but looses all skills and cannot gain any more experience, and he cannot run (but may charge normally).

Now, to the question: Does this mean you can actually get a crossbow equipped marksman zombie? Does the hero also get the other rules of the zombies (such as No pain, Immune to Psychology, Immune to poison and Cause Fear). I do recon the Hero Zombie is a little special compared to the normal zombies, and maybe still retain a bit of their own soul (as stated in the fluff). That way, this guy remembers how to use his old equipment (that he wielded while he was still alive). Even a bow???

I have completed a series of models to represent my enemies' fallen heroes, and before I sculp one with a crossbow I remembered a lot of other loopholes in the description Razz

Any thoughts on this???

I wouldn't call it a loophole, but more of a non-description. I think that this pretty much makes it up to you, and your group. It would not be the first time I've ever heard of an undead monster shooting at people, not that I have any readily available sources to cite...

Yeah, but isn't the reason as to why they dont use weapons that they dont know how to use them? I got three human zombie heroes as of yet. One with two handed sword (Marienburger styled clothes and a nice hat), and two sort of random merc zombies with rusted armour bits and weaponry. I will soon post them in my Undead Warband thread. Now I need a Orc and Skaven zombie too before I am done

Sartori: I agree. Imagine a zombie reloading a pistol or a crossbow. I guess a close combat weapon will count, as a warrior who died with his weapon in hand will still be holding it (thank Nagash for Rigor Mortis...). I think we will count melee only Smile

One thing to consider - these are zombies made from heroes, not regular run-of-the-graveyard-used-to-be-townsfolk zombies.

Another to consider - these zombies are made from heroes who died in a wyrdstone-infested large ruined area.

A third thing to consider - they were zombified just after dying. Probably didn't even wait one night, and these zombies were likely never buried.

Maybe they retain just a bit more of their former selves....

Look carefully at the wording of "The dead Hero retains his characteristics and all his weapons and armour but may not use any other equipment or skills." (bolds mine) By "rules as written" that means missile weapons as well. What is bad is that the vague wording can be construed to mean that the zombie doesn't forget skills, just that he can't use "other skills." Ugh.

cianty, Da Bank, RationalLemming, can we get a FAQ on this spell (including both the equipment and skills items), or am I just not remembering one right now?

The last time that happened it was played as not frenzied, but I think that's because the owning player forgot to include that information. If the hero has taken an injury that affects his characteristics we always include it so why not frenzy? (We nerf frenzy to plus 1 attack only so frenzied folks aren't so much of an issue...)

Frenzy is part of the psychology rules. I personally would exclude that from a zombie hero that was created.

We play that they keep their weapons and equipment, but any skills including spells are lost.

However, the other good part about getting a hero zombie is the potential for boosted stats!

This zombie is the absolute opposite of any other zombies. Yes, it is confusing. A zombie from SOA will feel Nop pain and etc, just like any othe zombie. Yes, he can still use his xbow. Yes, this is very confusing but this one spell is a loop hole for normal rules.
p.58 “Spell of Awakening”. Add: “The new
Zombie follows all the normal Zombie rules
(immune to poison, causes fear) except for

retaining his profile, weapons and armour.”

I found some FAQ by Tuomas Pirinen on the net. He said that the line was badly written, as the zombie is "... unable to wield any other weapons and armour, and cannot use any skill". So, no, no skills is any longer in effect.

And still, a zombie with a x-bow feels pretty awkward... but hey, if those are the rules! Smile

Time to revive this thread again, as I just came to think of something.

What are your thoughts on ressurected Possessed models? To get an undead flesh-golem tank model would be awesone. In that way, does the mutations count as skills that are lost or are they retained as they have no connection to the mind of the model. Also, fluffwise, I could see this work as the deamon has left the dead body, and the body is still intact enough to be raised.

Thoughts?

I would have no problem with someone re-animating a possessed model; it's just another creature (albeit composed of various people/ animals/ demons melded together) but it still has a body and still dies/ expires.

I love the idea of using a Flesh Golem styled piece to represent it.

I wouldn't see why mutations would suddenly not work anymore. Fluffwise it would be awkward for the poison in a scorpion tail, or the black blood, to still work, but it's a fantasy game, so I'd be alright allowing them to be used. Afterall it's not like extra arms or tentacles would fall off after death...

Yeah, I agree. To make it simple, all mutations would be intact, but all normal skills would not.

I am looking forward to hunting down some possessed with my zombie horde Smile

Any tips on models to represent a raised Possessed?

They way I model my uber zombies is to look at the original model and copy it but in a dead looking way . Exposed bones broken limbs paint it a paler colour

what model does your opponent use get a pic of it and we can brainstorm how to zombify it before you kill him and reanimate his corpse. I always wanted a possesed Uber zombie but noone in my group had any

I have made zombie "heroes" for pretty much all other races (Dwarf, Elf, all merceary warbands, skaven and even an Orc with missing lower jaw Smile )
I think I might go bananas with the bits box and create some fleshy abomination, sorta like an atrophied frankensteins monster Very Happy
