So anyways, im new here and due to some advice i got in the "introduce yourself" post i thought id just leap in and start posting up stuff (albeit mediocre and with pics of average to poor quality - will get better).
Bought some second hand old gw savage orks, which are significantly more detailed and 'unique' than the new ones. a drummer was included, who was a pretty cool model but needed to off the drum. could not be arsed sitting there with a file so took it to work where i figured adequate tools should be available.
anyways, progress shots from today (will begin with painting tomorrow)

Drum is gone (took all of 15 seconds - just out of curiosity how do others cut bits off metal minis?)

preserved heaps of the model.

green stuffed (will see what it looks like when painted)

the tool: (the possibilities are endless... i have a scheme involving giving a squig 'real' composite teeth)

The older GW minis are ENTIRELY different Beasties than the newer stuff...not necessarily better, but different. I like both styles, but the Oldies have a sentimental appeal & a certain charm about them. The Lad looks like he made a FINE adjustment to his non-musical role...GOOD WORK! You've got yourself the ULTIMATE modelling tool there. I'm INSANELY jealous...the insane part is standard fare with moi. (minor) ork modification Fresse

Ha nice tool!
I use a Dremel on metal (and occasionally plastic parts, carefully...), but it's probably not nearly as clean as I bet that thing can be Razz

Nice classic orc there mate!

I really like those classic models and have a good bunch myself, but for modelling options plastics are a real godsend.

As for how to cut the metal ones, it all depends on several factors: The complexity of the model-piece I'm trying to cut off, and if I WANT to preserve the part i'm removing for future projects (need to cut very carefully) or if the part is directly going to the trash bin as I don't want/need it.

For the first case, I'll use a tiny modellers hand saw and try to cut slowly around the piece, trying to keep both parts complete.

If I'm just throwing the unwanted piece, I'll get a BIG saw to remove the piece and then sand-file the part I want.

Hope that helps.

And we all want to see that orc model finished, so keep working man! (minor) ork modification Icon_wink

Best wishes.

nope, wife is a dentist, so i get the toys without the blood and saliva (not to mention halitosis).

anyways, started panting it up, but before i was done, and then decided to redo some of the green stuffed portion. In terms of painting 'technique' (or perhaps lack there of) i very much just work on : undercoat > base coat > main shade > wash (watered down gw black) > then a combination of dry brushing and highlights until i figure im just making it worse.

"as is" from another angle

p.s. will base them on round bases later, when i work out exactly what im doing with my bases

Using a combination of old & new GW minis you WILL MOST DEFINITELY be able to pick out the Big 'Uns at a glance...the Lads have gotten bigger, even with their poorer posture, over the years. Both of the Boys are LOOKIN' GOOD. (minor) ork modification 544694

hmmm the drummer is quite smaller than the other one...(minor) ork modification 2194 but still it doesn't matter! It varies the warband a bit
