Other than being a total man-slut for mini's, music and horror movies, I'm also a bookworm.
And since Christmas is creeping up, not unlike a Jehovah's witness in the bushes, I'm in desperate need of something new to read while my wife's little sister is tearing up tons of useless crap some people would call presents (the sum of it all is that I'm spending X-mas with my wife's family, far away from all my toys and joys).

Anyho, any recommendations? Preferably in the horror/thriller/satire department (and please, no GW, Eddings or Tolkien. GW & Eddings give me piles and I've already read everything by Tolkien since I was 8 ).

Cheers!

Of course I don't know what you already read on the Warhammer novels part put I recently read all the books from Gotrek and Felix, which were particular inspiring for my new Mordheim warband: the slayers. Nice quick and easy reading, good action and funny as well! The Gotrek and Felix novels you now can get in trilogy bundles which gives a nice big pack of pages to indulge yourself in.
Besides that I also read recently the adventures of Florin and Lorenzo, also good reading material for the christmas days.

Not Horror/Thriller/Satire, but I'm reading Orson Scott Card's "homecoming" series right now and it's decent. Really everything I've read by him is, although if you're not into sci-fi then you probably won't like it. I can say pretty much the same about Asimov - if you're into sci-fi then it's pretty darn good, but of not then you may not find it so interesting.

I enjoyed His Dark Materials pretty well, which is hard to classify in terms of genre. It's not traditional fantasy, but I guess that's the closest generic descriptor. The books are by far superior to The Golden Compass movie.

Also, it's very short but the story "Who Goes There?" (which John Carpenter's The Thing is based on) is really good.

From C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy, Out of the Silent Planet is pretty good. The rest not so much (well, I didn't finish because the blatant metaphors got to me).

I've never read any myself, but of course I've always heard good things about Lovecraft as far as Horror goes, and being pretty familiar with the lore (despite not having actually read the stories) it seems pretty cool.

Goonstah- Pratchett is always a safe bet. But I've already read them all 3-5 times each (except the new one) and seen all the movies about a hundred times. Yes, I'm a fanboy X-mas is creeping up and I need something to read. Icon_biggrin

Myntokk- I might have to check those out. I've never been that much into sci-fi but I'd figure I'd go there sooner or later. Ta X-mas is creeping up and I need something to read. 544694

I'll join the Pratchett club - discworld is AMAZING!! Smile
There's both some pure fantasy ones with wizards and stuff, but "the watch" is kind of fantasy mixed with crime investigation Smile

And they're all hillariously funny!

I say let's start a Discworld cult! There seems to be enough fans here anyway. And Deafnala can be our headpriest, him having seniority and all.. And the very studly beard of course X-mas is creeping up and I need something to read. Icon_biggrin

Anyho, got Queen Victoria- Demon Hunter in the mail today, so that saved my x-mas holiday. But keep them suggestions coming! If the dark gods of Yule hears my prayers and accepts my sacrifices of year old sprouts I will be able to buy more books soon and I'm always interested in new reading. (better that than those gods awful boring and overpriced school books).

Goonstah- Not really fantasy per se, but it's fantastically weird:
Robert Rankin's The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies Of The Apocalypse
It's sort of nursery rhymes going steampunk. A very weird book by a very weird man.
Other than that the only ones I can recommend is Neil Gaiman and Christopher Moore, but that's more towards horror than fantasy, or in some cases a mix.

The "Gor" series (starting with Tarnsman of Gor) is like B-movie fantasy literature. It's funny because of how utterly ridiculous it is. I guess I can't speak for the entire series, seeing as I only finished the first and started the second of a 20+ book series, but man it's over the top. I've heard that later books get more and more philosophical, however, and the author's isn't exactly a philosophy that I subscribe to, so I don't know that getting invested would be worthwhile.

for Mr. Sinister - I forgot to mention Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead. I'd call it a mix between historic fiction and horror, and it focuses heavily on early norse society (I wanna say 10th century?). It's really good, also better than it's movie adaptation (The Thirteenth Warrior). Furthermore, and kinda in the same vein, I've heard that Grendel is really good, but haven't read it myself. It retells the first part of "Beowulf" from Grendel's perspective.

The Asimov that I've read is interesting because, even though it is sci-fi, it really reads more like a mystery novel.

I'm chiming in a bit late...us Old Guys DO move rather sowly if at all X-mas is creeping up and I need something to read. Suspect . For something light you could do worse than Robert Lynn Asprin's Myth Adventures...not as wildly funny as Pratchett but then what is?. For some non stop swashbuckling heroic adventures David Gemmell is The Man...start with Legend. X-mas is creeping up and I need something to read. 544694

The Cult of Pratchett is a FINE IDEA...the man deserves a quasi-religious fan base...sort of. You can count me in...for whatever that's worth. IF ONLY I had a source for the minis...& the $s to purchase them. AND Admin. Tom is a Fellow Fanatic...you can tell by the Pink Orcs. This could become Tom's X-mas is creeping up and I need something to read. Sleep Ankh-Morpork Forum. OH BABY!
