so i bought some hexagonal 20mm (25mm?) bases to try out instead of the square bases (i dont know what models they are from or if they are even GW, but they look like GW bases). i thought that it might make B2B contact less messy.

has anybody tryed this? would it make things better........OR WORSE?

They COULD be GW bases. Way back when [that's Old Guy Speak for the early '80s Suspect ], GW had ALL sorts of bases; the square bases had optional staright of diagonal slots; there were three mini bases of 20mmX60mm & 25mmX75mm sizes with plug in round bases of about 15mm & 20mm respectively. Being a Pack Rat Guy, I still have some of these oldies. COOL if somewhat strange stuff! Suspect

Hex Bases are used in Battle Tech as the game is played on, appropriately, terrain boards marked out in hexes.

I think if they are GW bases then it will say so under them, won't it? Something like "(C) GW"?

He did seem to wonder, so I made a suggestion how to effortlessly solve the mystery by looking what it says under the base. Got a problem with that? Evil or Very Mad

Well, they are uncommon. Even more uncommon than round bases. You should make it dependent on your gaming group (if at all). If they are fine with it, go for it! The most important thing is that you are happy with your models and have fun, so if your peers are cool with it then that's all you need.

Just be aware that other people will find them strange (I know I do) and if they are snobs they might not let you play with them (I know I would let you use them). Especially at a GW store. Since Mordheim is not a turnament game and not supported anyways you shouldn't bother with what other think though.

From a practical point of view hex bases offer many oportunities.. like specifying a models top and side in a more refined way than normal square bases. Do you know the Pit Fighter game that was released in Fanatic Magazine 1 and 3? Usually games that emphasis on close combat like to use those bases and make use of them.

Personally I like round bases best for skirmish games as they look "natural" and not so artifical. Hex bases are cool if you make use of the shape though. Unless you want to write some advanced combat rules for Mordheim I don't see a point in using such unconventional bases (unless you LOVE their shape).

yah the reason i got them is so i could use the shape. it seems like it would be easier to move in groups and huddle up in formations and B2B combat. i dont plan on writing any special rules for them though. i did see the pit fighter article and thats where i got the idea to try it

our mordhiem group is small and i was planning on trying to get us all to switch to hex bases. or at lest test out a few differenet bases (square, hex, circles) and see what is more orderly and clean looking.

as for being in a GW store.....guh i hate going in and telling them we play mordheim. they ALWAYS tell us its an old game and that nobody really plays it, and they try to sell us fantasy armies, and sign me up for painting classes.

so you've seen mordhiem groups that use round bases?

Tell me about. I hate the losers in my local GW store. They're idiots...

Sort of. Not in reality and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Occasionally someone on this board posts minis with round bases. I am not sure if they have posted their experience with them though. You should go to this post and ask if anyone has any experience with them:

Your experience in a GW store is the polar opposite of mine : / most of the staffers in my local are big on mordheim, necromunda, BFG and bloodbowl, shit we had a necromunda campaign ran by one of the full timers there a few months back. I'm running a mordheim campaign in a few weeks and have a few of the staff and regulars interested in playing along.

At one time basing your minis on GW recommended square base was mandated for tournament play or simply to make the minis usable in WHFB. Since there really aren't any tournaments anymore & you aren't into large scale mayhem, there is little reason to adhere to any particular base style.
Round bases seem to be the standard in non-GW skirmish games. As such, they might be considered if you wanted to use your Mordheimers with a different gaming system. The hex base offer some unique benefits for games like Battle Tech & CAV where a more precise facing is necessary. Both the round & hex bases, being larger than the 20mm variety, offer a slightly larger surface for scenicing. Deaf Nala Smiley

In the defence of GW local stores (and I hate going off topic again) I should probably add that of course not all stores and their staff suck. The best example I know of is the GW store in Poole who let Werekin and his group run a full BTB playtest campaign.

I believe most GW staffers are not fully trained in SG Games. I worked at two GW stores back around 2001 and no one talked or pushed SG games. When I worked you were trained in 40K or Fantasy and you were to specialize in one and two if possible. You were "encouraged" to collect more armies and expand off the one you had. Nothing was ever brought up to learn SG.

There is a point system for sales and SG don't cover that ($) unless you are buying the boxset for BFG, Necro and Mordheim.

The core gaming is centered on 40K, Fantasy and LOTR as all three have "starter" sets and you can sell "regiments" along with it.

Maybe GW's points system (internal grading scale) has changed but 9 years it was this way.

i work retail too, and i understand the system and it makes since. i just dont like them trying to talk me into stuff i'm not into. they dont lissen to us when we talk lol

there is the guy named ROB (my group now names all roming hazards and monsters in our campains ROB) at one of the local GW, and dispite the fact i told him i'm into heavy converting, and i'm a product design major in school, i paint all the time, sculpt and make molds and casts on a regular bases. he still was still telling me to sign up for painting classes, because it would help my skill level -_-

but there are GW employees that are the opposite of that, and those are the guys we like to come in and talk to

Back on topic: I reckon hex bases could be fun, tell us how it goes.

EDIT: didn't GW bring out a game were IG fought renegades on hex-bases?
