Hello,  . . . . . . 3 of us are starting a new Mordheim campaign. We have played a few 500gp sessions (without any experience gains etc.) and have gotten used to the playstyle. Plus, we have lots of experience with WHFB.. . . . . .  Which ruleset should we look at? Should we stick with the campaign rules (experience gain, money, loot etc.) from the original Mordheim book first and maybe add BTB later? Or is it worth it to include BTB right from the start? We are playing Skaven, Undead and O&G. . . . . . .  We will be playing a session of 2-3 games every 4-6 weeks or so (time is sparse, and there is much other Tabletop fighting to do eeexcellent! ), The Mordheim campaign will be embedded in a larger Mighty Empires campaign (together with WHFB and WHFB Warband games).  I have read both rulesets, BTB seems to add a lot of fun stuff but I cannot yet estimate how much "complexity" it adds, and whether it's overkill for 3 players that play Mordheim 8-10 times a year.. . . . . .  Thanks for any opinions! . . . . . .  EDIT: Erm, line breaks get lost posting this. Using Opera...

Hmmm, I'd play a short vannilla campaign first. When I first started playing Mordheim (after playing FB) it took a while to get used to moving the focus away from the table-top and towards the after-game sequences. But, if you feel up to it, jump straight in and play BTB!

Is there any drawback starting with basic Mordheim and then adding BTB later on (with the same warbands, not starting over)?

Well, warbands tend tp get fine-tuned tp their soroundings. (So an EiF warband might have more archers and horses, wheras the same warband in built up board might lean further towards mobile archers backed up with hand-to-hand experts.)

If you're using it with WFB, another two good campaigns to possibly try are "Empire in Flames" or "Nemesis Crown". I'm assuming your existing terrain will mostly involve hills and small woods, like most WFB terrain... if so, it might lend itself well to an 'outdoorsy" campaign like EiF or NC.

Oh, and by the way, if your WFB battle games directly affect your Mord games, or you have characters from one showing up in the other game, finding the price/conversion is sometimes neat. In the OOOLD 5th edition, 1 point = about 5 gc. (This only applied when buying troops... when buying equipment, it's closer to 1 point= 7-15gc.) This way, winning a WFB game might give you an X-sized bonus in your Mord game, or similar. If you can, also take a look at Warhammer Skirmish, if only because certain games will have a direct bonus/penalty on WFB games.

You should play whatever you want to play. The City of the Damned (Mordheim), Empire in Flames, Khemri, BTB.. those are all just settings. They are defined by specific Exploration charts, scenarios, weather and random happenings. There is nothing to keep you from switching settings in between a campaign. Just do what makes you happy.

Settings are important if you want to create scenery for your games. It makes sense to stick to one setting to give your gaming table a consistent look. Mixing Lustria pools, Khemri tombs and Cathayan temples surely doesn't look so cool.

So while settings shouldn't bother you too much in general, the BTB supplement is somewhat special. You can use it like any other setting but the core feature is the objectives. And if you do want to use the warband objectives you should use them right from the beginning and you should be playing in the BTB setting. Simply adding the objectives later is not good because the objectives are designed to be used right from the start so warband development is factored into how they work. Adding them to powered up warbands changes the balance and can lead to disadvantages of certain warbands.

Since you are new to Mordheim I would suggest playing a few real scenarios. The most important difference to Warhammer is not the basic game mechanics but the campaign system so you should definately apply Serious Injuries and exploration rolls. This way you can familiarize yourselves with the system and get a better grasp of what might happen during a campaign. Then you can plan your warband accordingly and start a new campaign with the full BTB rules.

If you don't want to waste any time, then you can just start a BTB campaign right away. Just be aware: those who spend the time to properly read the supplement and think about the possibilities and options and how to advance quickly in their objectives are most likely to win the campaign.

Also you might find the little article "Pathways to Prophecy" interesting if you are using the objectives. It can be found in the articles section of the BTB website.

I hope this was somewhat useful. Smile
