Hey Guys,
I've read alot of threads about Mordheim and none of them discuss on how to finish a campaign....so how do you guys do it?

Cheers

Earlier or later, our group loses the interest in playing Mordheim. That's how our campaigns end.
Sad but true.

Yeah I mean, obviously you can't play Mordheim 7/7 days. You need to take breaks. For our group, Mordheim is more like a 2x per year thing. When we get together, we play a few games and then we put the table, the miniatures and the dice away until the next holidays.

I'm your dreams, make it real, I'm your eyes when you must steal, I'm your pain when you can't feel... sad but true Wink

But usually we try to "finish what we started". And I wouldn't say that we so much "lose interest" but rather that we usually like to "call it a day" when we feel like we've done our share of gaming Smile

Use the Border Town Burning campaign rules where every warband has its individual goal throughout the campaign and can achieve that or lose in the end. Very Happy

That's a nice idea cianty. I'll see that I use something like this in our next campaign(when ever that will be).

We agree a finish date when we start a campaign. That way everyone is racing to have the highest Warband Rating (and win-ratio to decide a tied WR score) at the end, so they can claim they won!

We always try to write a story of the campaign and wrap up the tale at the end.

Do you make sure that everyone has played the same amount of games? So if someone has been able to play 20 games, and another only 10... tough luck? I figure it might even it out if you divide the warband ranking by the number of games... ? would that work?

I do like this Idea though. it's a great way to keep people involved. how long do you usually run the champaign for? 1 week? 1 month? 6 months?

Thanks

We have never tried to make sure everyone plays the same number of games because it would never work with our group. We have members who have a lot of free time and members with families and other hobbies and jobs who only get to play sometimes (one even works off-shore and only plays when he's back on dry land!). So yes, I guess we call that "tough" tongue

I don't think ranking divided by number of games would work as someone with a starter warband would always win the campaign!

We have stuck to about 2 to 3 months for the last few but these haven't just been Mordheim campaigns - they have been Narrative campaigns that include Mordheim along-side Warhammer and Naval games that all feed into a story:

Sartosa 1 - 28 August '06 to 20 December '06 (14 weeks)
Sartosa 2 - 26 January '07 to 7 June '07 (13 weeks)
Nemesis Crown - 27 June '07 to 7 August '07 (6 weeks)
Sands of War - 13 November '07 to 19 December '07 (8 weeks)

The players were divided into factions and earn points for their faction as a whole rather than just for themselves. This sort of solves the occasional players problem as well!

I think one week is definatly too short. In my opinion 2 months are a good time(at least after that time my group loses the interest).

Thanks Ashton! Cool

I plan the beginning and make the rest up as the players post their reports. I have always loved narrative battle reports and encourage them to write them too - that way I can just copy/paste the best bits into the weekly updates!

Dude, that's some hardcore gaming Very Happy

Personnaly, I only have one opponent so when we play, after 10 games or so, one of us becomes too powerful and the campaign starts to get boring. So we wrap it up and stop playing for 6 months and then we start again.

My mates and I just keep playing. There is no end to a campaign. If you want to keep a warband going then do it. People who start one fresh just get underdog bonuses and level up quickly (which is more fun in my opinion.) We get to play a lot of games, so we kinda just keep rotating who starts again which keeps our 'campaign' going forever.

Cheers ~ Steve

That is very interesting... Is it still fun to play against an underdog as a seasoned warband? Does the Underdog have fun being destroyed?

How many people are usually in a game? 2? 4?

I image that with 4, an underdog has a better chance of surviving/having fun.

once me and my friends made a end game kinda turnament with this scenario

http://mordheimer.com/scenarios/001-020/015-grudge_match.htm

instead of champions in the middle it was the leader

with groups of 1vs1, 1vs1, 1vs1, 1vs1 winners would advance to next round of
1vs1, 1vs1.. and then grand finale went down between the 2 most hardest and notorius leaders (and warbands) Razz

All warband leaders became Dramatis personae for our next campaign

With the group we play with, it's more or less until every warband maxes out... everyone is from 300-500 rating, and little tired of their warband. So everyone gravitates from the old warband to the new (though there is at least one game of the 300 ratings vs. the 50ratings... talk about underdog bonus!) So if you want to end it, instigate a reboot... someone else will probably follow.

Hold on to the warband lists for later, just in case you feel nostalgic.

You could employee a mechanism in your campaign that will foreshadow how the game will end.

I designed a several critters based on the Cthulu mythos, including a minor and a major avatar of Cthulu. (However for GW website reference, it will be called "Ik-Thul-Tu".) Then these critters will be used in an invasion effort.

In game 3 of the new campaign. A lone Brine Witch (a half woman-half fish spell caster) came out of the eastern sea.

THe players thought it was just a random Sartosan event and they just ignored or attacked the critter.

Well as the campaign progresses, the critters will become more numerous and stronger/varied.

So in our 5th game, a Brine Witch and a Deep One (A half-man,half-fish warrior) will show up.

In our 8th game 2 Brine Witches, and 2 Deep Ones will show up. (We'll only use these in a multiplayer game of 5+ folks.)

Then in game 11, 1 Brine Witch, 1 Deep One,3 Cultists (treated as Possessed Brethern), and a minor Avatar of "Ik-thul-Tu".

Then in game 15, 3 Brine Witches and 3 Deep Ones.

Then in game 20, 3 Brine Witches, 3 Deep Ones, 3 Cultists, the Great "Ik-Thul-Tu" will appear after a successful summoning. If Ik-Thul-Tu is summoned and the players don't destroy it, then their Mordheim campaign is OVER. If they succeed in slaying him then the slaying warband gets to start the next campaign with an advance on all of their starting heroes.

That's a pretty cool idea. I like that idea a lot. So instead of just random fighting of each other there is a third party which is unknowingly connected to the end of the game. My only problem with that is there'd have to be someone running the thrid party... and thus not get his own warband Sad

But I guess you can fix this by making the "end game" scenario/rules known to all.

But I like. Wink

Actually, the way we are running it is the "monsters" get their own turn, and they attack knocked down, stunned, and wounded folks first.

Because in the Cthulu mythos, ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE, ergo; the weak die first.

So they sort of run them selves, by showing up on the same table side or summoning area every time, and then they just kill those that are already suffering.

Or, in case the warbands are too timid and no one is knocked down, stunned, or otherwise injured, the Ik-thul-Tu monsters move in a random direction or towards the fighting, so they can "muck in" sooner.

Would guys like me to post the stats?

Right, but you said:
dr_Remulack wrote:

That led me to believe that someone was not necessarily, playing the monsters, but had the "end game goal" in mind.. ?

Either way, that sounds like a great idea. I love random events in games. It keeps everyone on their toes. Oh boy, I can't wait to play again.

As a fellow cthulhu cultist I say post them stats! What models did you use for deep ones? I havn't seen any good fish monster models ever!

Edit: Except for the fismen of Saratosa but those are technically Orks, but very well done!
