So I am considering switching to Vallejo paints slowly.

What Vallejo colours are you using the most? Which ones do you consider the most useful?

For Citadel I found these to be among the most useful ones:
Bestial Brown
Bleached Bone
Codex Grey
Dark Flesh
Fortress Grey
Ghostly Grey
Scorched Brown
Snakebite Leather

Lots of brown/beige there. Can you tell me the Vallejo equivalents for these colours?

Are there any unique Vallejo tones that are worth checking out?

So I am looking for a purchase list of V colours. I am thankful for any advice and suggestions. Smile

How different you can be... Many of your GW paints have never sat their foot in my apartment Razz I have never used much Valejo paints but one I really loved was their gold. Gold can be very hard to cover other paints with and you often have to layer a lot of times. But Valejo covers directly. So that is a recommendation

Thanks, Trulsa! I'll add that to my list - especially since I am not too satisfied with my Citadel gold either.

About the colours - it surely depends on what you paint with them. I started as a Beastman player so Dark Flesh and Bestial Brown were one of my first most used colours ever. I still use them various things (wood, brickwork). I guess Tom's palette is somewhat similar.

Oh, this reminds me: what colours would you suggest for painting human skins (generic ones)? That would be very useful.

When I paint skin I use Bronzed flesh as base, I put one to two layers of flesh wash and then I highlight with first bronzed flesh and then with elf flesh.

I would say that my most used colors are: Beastial brown, terracotta, bleached bone, bronzed Flesh, Mechrite red, enchanted blue and Mithril silver. Except chaos black and skull white that I always use...

Mechrite Red is FANTASTIC!! I use it as a base to everything red I do Razz

And as a orc and goblin player I have used a lot of snot green and goblin green of course but those I doesn't use much to everything else...

Cianty, here you have a table listing all Vallejo colours and their GW counterpart.

EDIT: Oh, and here is a guide to painting skin and faces which offers a list of colours for 6 skin types Smile

When I was first getting into Vallejo paints I started off with one of the model color sets. I have found that it pretty much contained all the basics I have needed, and I would highly suggest it to anyone wanting to get into Vallejo.

I have a full set of the Vallejo now, but this basic set was the BEST 35$ I have ever spent.

Model Color Set - 01

This set includes one bottle of each:
848 Super Silver,
849 Super Gold,
850 Medium Olive,
851 Deep Orange,
875 Beige Brown,
899 Prussian Blue Dark,
901 Pastel Blue,
908 Carmine Red,
915 Deep Yellow,
926 Red,
950 Black,
951 White,
975 Military Green,
981 Orange Brown,
984 Flat Brown,
989 Sky Grey

Vallejo game colour line has finished a bit more shiny, more indicated for fantasy miniatures, on the other hand the model colour line is principally for historical with finished more 'real', less shiny, but they are perfectly compatible sure.

Look at their homepage: http://www.acrylicosvallejo.com/

I've had some experience with Vallejo Model Colours, they're pretty
nice, look realistic... but the endless shaking before painting! Arrrghh,
that really annoys me!
I don't know if this is the same with the Game Colour variant, but for me it's enough reason for me not to switch to the Vallejo Model Colour range.. Also, the model colours tends to dry up different, sometimes it looks a little 'pigmenty' and matte. The paints are based on two parts just like the foundation paints, and sometimes the 'second colour' dries up in the recesses..
Anyway, the colours are very nice and realistic!
Hope this helps in some way! Razz

Cheers!

I usually place a small pebble and a few drops of "acrilic retardant" to each dropper.

That has helped me a lot.

In fact, I changed all my paint to droppers as I find them much easier to use, but some people just don't like them. A matter of tastes.
