Try some Badab Black wash, it works wonders.

Alternatively, get you hands on some Mechrite Red (I think that's the name) - the red foundation paint - it is a nice, realistic and muted red, and covers well - providing a solid base. Personally I think that blood red is a bit too vibrant, and prefer to use Scab Red and Red Gore to build my reds, saving the Blood Red solely for the highlights. It gives a much better result, looks less cartoony and decidedly more realistic than straight Blood Red.

There is a great article on Coolminiornot about painting metallics.

Its more of an advanced technique, but maybe you could take away something from it. Either way it is worth a look. The guy that wrote the article is a MASTER in the paintint world.

For my Orcs I use a Scab red base coat, then apply blood red. After that I wash it with Badab Black

This is what I would do (I gave my orcs blue armour, that lucky Wink ): Start with a scab red basecoat, and highlight with blood red mixed in. Then make some "scratches" with ckaos black and higlight it with chainmail.
If you like I could make some pictures of my orcs.

@magnoliafan

Yeah i'd like that, i just want to have a good picture as to use for idea's. Just one of the problems with higlithing is that for my boss, im using the grimgor model. And his shoulderplates for example are just flat so no spots to highlite or anything. Any idea's on that ?

You could just highlight the rim of the shoulder armour. I have the model painted, but as it was in my earlier years, I will first have to look if it is done well. In case it is, I will take a picture and upload it.

Rory, go to the Miniatures Section and I have my Orc warband up in there. Plenty of red armor going around.

Terracotta with a red ink wash is how I paint natural red armour. It looks great. I did it on my buddies near albino D&D character, and he loved it. Too bad I never took pics...
