Colonel DaBank’s Last Chancers

12/02/08

After completing another mission Colonel DaBank’s Last Chancers were in route back to their base when a distress call for help from the planet……. This planet was a major mining planet but is only a few years from having the entire planet mined out. The planet has been off loading equipment and closing up the mines and towns that are not being used any more.

It seems this planet has undergone some environmental concerns and natural disasters have been happening lately. The entire PDF has been deployed around the planet working to get people moved out and to help with the natural disasters.

Some redneck miners said they saw meteorites crashing into one section of the planet but no one else caught it.

The Governor of the planet has requested aid from other Emperial Ships to help out.

Colonel DaBank and a squad of Last Chancers landed and were assigned to go investigate two missing PDF platoons in an abandoned mining town.

Colonel DaBank and he squad start looking for clues and split up into two groups. All is quiet in the abandoned town, too quiet. The Last Chancers move forward and then a loud explosion goes off and then another. Orks! There were a couple of them in a building throwing grenades at SGT Rock, SGT Pepper, PVT G. Michaels (Flamer) and two troopers were diving for cover.

Pvt G Micheals (Flammer) was knocked down by the blast but recovered.

The Last Chancers moved forward taking cover behind anything they could. They formed up defensive positions and waited for the Orks to come and they did.

The Orks came barreling full speed ahead. The Weirdboy ran ahead of the group in the attempt to inflict serious damage on the “hummies”. The Boyz came yelling and shooting. Fortunately, most Orks are horrible shots but a few found their marks and knocked two troops down. Now the Orks were within charge range and they yelled “Waaaaagh!”. A few Boyz surround LT Dan and beat him to a pulp.

Colonel DaBank realizing that the green tide was not going to stop decided to fall back (routed) in order to pull the Orks into a trap.

Oh man that looks fun! Did it start on the surface and then move into a compound or something? I look forward to seeing the rules and warbands for this, I might try to get some people in my gaming group to give it a go!

What's with the black dragon though?! Laughing

Thanks.

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of SCI FI terrain. So we have to use a mixture of Mordheim and what SCI FI stuff we got. It works.

@Deafnala and Duce...sure you are welcome to my basement, we can play board games, Mordheim and etc a few times a week.

The tiles was from our 1st playtest game a few months back. We intended to play Space Hulk and then it involved into a new gaming environment. Our game is a mixture of Space Hulk, Space Crusade, Gorka Morka, Necromunda, Mordheim and balancing.

The pics of the guys in and around Mordheimish terrain are from last night, and the pics of the IG taking on the Genestealers is from this summer.

Howdy! The game (Death Squads) is coming along fine! DaBank and I have been working hard, following the example of 'Border Town Burning' in how to create GREAT supplement. The basic rules are 100 pages (includes everything... from basic characteristics to game mechanics). For Mordheim veterans this would be a cake-walk... but there are subtle differences (we fixed Armor and Cover Saves, simplified climbing and falling, detailed terrain movement, weapons and more!)

DaBank has gone rule design and terrain crazy... and I have been 'tricked' into massive writing and model painting! I will write my story later on... the White Waaagh!

Mordheimer is alive and well. He has been busy as a one legged man in a butt kicking contest. LOL.

Yes, he has been busy as he has made some AWESOME models through conversions and painting. Mordheimer is extremely talented. affraid

Mordheimer's writing skills and being able to create documents is great!

Mordheimer and I are heavily involved in the new area of 40K Universe Skirmish and it is going very well.

We started our 1st campaign officially on Tuesday the 2nd. We only got one game in but there will be more to come.

Fortunately, neither of of lost a hero or henchmen from the heavy combat, both shooting and HTH.

This whole process is a revelation to me as I NEVER liked 40K. I was a Warhammer Fantasy player turned MOrdheim and that was it.

This game is extremely fun and exciting.

We will post photos from each game and hopefully can write more stories.

Edwin will write better stories as he is extremely talented at that.

Here is the background for our campaign. Fairly long read (me and my over-writing) but I think it will get you in the mood. Feel free to comment... my battle report on the 1st battle comming up soon! Laughing

========================================

Death Squads Campaign 01; The Salvation of Melkor

Prelude
The system of Karameikos is fairly unremarkable; especially when compared to others in the Imperium of Man. Composed of five planets, two are habitable and only the fourth planet was successfully colonized over 150 years ago. While it is now catalogues as an Agri-World, it was not always that way. Karameikos IV is has two main continents. The original colonists settled on the southern continent to start a mining operation. Geological Servitors found large deposits of iron ore, and surprisingly a vast deposit of Corelium. This rare compound can be used to refine promethium to a yield of 99.8% purity, thus allowing existing refineries to double their production of the fuel with minimal fitting. The problem with the extraction of Corelium is that several poisonous, mutagenic and carcinogenic catalysts are required for its stabilization.

Surprisingly, the planetary governor settled on the northern continent and had the foresight of creating a stabilizing infrastructure rather than ravaging and stripping the planet bare. The rich valleys were setup aside for agricultural lands, even with the lack of population at these early stages of colonization. Terrestrial, maritime, aerial and orbital shipping docks were established, as well as dedicated urban areas. The northern continent became the principal support for the planet, while the southern became an exporter of a precious commodity for the Imperium. Suddenly Karameikos IV became important for bureaucrats in Terra.

Mining operations focused near the town of Melkor for 120 years. The local flora and fauna was pretty much extinct and habitats were demolished to construct Manofactoriums. Imperial Navy cruisers, as well as two full regiments of Guardsmen were deployed to Melkor to protect the region from attack. Production started to decrease gradually until the Corelium was depleted. Mining operations continued, but the economic rewards became no-existing. Mining explosions, due negligence or rumored meteorites, were the cause for a severe mining accident that caused the death of over 1,000 miners. This gave the Governor the final excuse to close operations in the city of Melkor.

The whole continent was declared a toxic wasteland, Terranus Venenosi, and most the population moved to the northern continent. Manofactoriums were retrofitted for automatic operations for the production of Imperial weaponry. The government officials, in alliance with environmentalists, struck a brilliant idea. Since the planet had lost its main source of income and the southern region was devastated. Arid winds howl over the poisoned flat planes. They decided to re-invent the area; environmentally sound energy farming.

With the aid of the Adeptus Mechanicus and their Servitors, solar and wind farms were established in key areas near Melkor. The energy created was used by the Manofactoriums to increase production (especially of energy weapons) and easily transported to the northern continent for local use and the surplus exported.

Eleven years later, the planetary regional roles are reversed; the south supports the infrastructure of the northern developments. The valleys of the north are productive and industries have reached equilibrium with the environment. New goals to clean the southern continents are on their way, and is expected that the region could return to prosperity in 300 hundred years. The city of Melkor is almost abandoned, with skeletal crews of Servitors and training regimental Guardsmen living in the area.

It was just two weeks ago that a major earthquake struck the capital city of Burgoise. The natural disaster forced planetary governments to move all military personnel to the area for humanitarian assistance. Missing from this movement was the Gamma Company of the Karameikos Planetary Defense Force, which was currently in training on Melkor. The cities energy production has decreased by 6.2%, and the Gamma Company has not reported back. No official resources can be spared to find answer to these questions. While on some deserved R&R, Colonel DaBank’s Last Chancers were pleaded by local relief agencies to investigate. They have travelled half the planet, only to find no human on the area. Only automatons carry their duties in endless monotonic routines. Something happened to their brother Guardsmen and the Colonel in intended to find out.

Unknown to almost everyone, the great mining accident a decade ago was no accident at all. A small ork space hulk actually crash landed on a section of the main mine. The crash cascaded explosions sealing the greenskins in the mine. They engage the miners and after they were all killed, they wage war against each other. Evolution worked its mysterious ways; the disorganized orks turned feral and the internal bickering has kept them their population in check. Not only the strongest survived, but the smartest did too. Scavengers turned to Meks, and more powerful weapons were brought into the mix. As ork aggressive nature found a way out of their underground entrapment.

Would the Last Chancers find their comrades and restore the region? Are the orks responsible for the situation on Melkor? This is the story, like many on the Imperium, of such heroes and villains.

My battle report for Game 01. Enjoy.

PS: I took the liberty of naming a Recruit... hope you don't mind! Razz

========================================

Game 01: Not your typical Orks…

He was barely a human jerky, his legs long gone and his arms useless with age. His body now entrapped in a grav-chair, his only companion his assistant Tobias. Tobias was a promising young star in the Xeno Biology circles, and becoming attached to Xeno Magus Biologist Holcade was quite an achievement. Tobias only bad trait was incessant chatting, that not even his quasi-death state could minimize. Yes, after the plasma incident, Tobias was now reduced to a Servo-Skull; a Holocam Servo-Skull to be precise. His duty was to record his Masters observations. Part of his brain was retained, thus Tobias knew almost by instinct what to record and what not, but had no idea when to shut up and stop spamming Holcade’s direct link screen. The old man had become a hermit, semi-retired now to the city of Melkor to study the surviving local insect population. Unknown to him, he would be the only witness to a planetary changing event.

He sent Tobias out to record images and sound in secrecy. No point of alerting the locals of his study and calling attention to himself. It was very curious that during the last few weeks, people have been harder to find. Tobias roamed the city, when he spotted some movement. Moving to a higher ground, it remained immobile and transmitted data back to the lab.

Colonel DaBank took his Last Chances in a recon mission, near the western subsection of Melkor. It still amazed him how different the place was, compared to the beaches of Rincon at the northern continent. Here, it was all shades of grey with the occasional brown thrown to it. In the 14 hours march, they have not seen a living soul… only three semi-functional Sanitation Servitors cleaning the ever-dirty streets of the residential area. His thoughts were interrupted all of the sudden…

- ‘Colonel…’
- ‘What is it this time Magoo, an ant crawling in top of a worm at 500 meters?’ the Colonel spat.
- ‘Huh… I’m confused Sir. You better take a look at it.’

Lifting his lagun’s scope he saw them; Orks. They have seen them in battle before, and these seemed rather small and pathetic. Then, he saw the reason for Private Magoo’s doubts. Before he could call him, Sergeant Pepper said,

- ‘By the Emperors’ Holy Light… I know this could be considered a heresy, but… aren’t those Boyz running on formation? This is either an abomination, or the biggest coincidence the Emperor could conceive in his Holy Mind.’
- ‘No matter. Look for the bigger one and drop him. They will scatter.’
- ‘Sir, that is what I was referring…’ interrupted Magoo. ‘The bigger one of the group is stupid. I mean, more than usual. They all seem to run in a clear advance formation 34-Alpha even with forward scouts… yet the bigger is out of formation and one seems like he painted himself all white. He may as well swallow a couple of plasma grenades and get it over with.’

Magoo was right… the bigger Ork was wearing a complete body suit white war-paint. This is very odd behavior, even for Orks. Then again, all Xenos are scum and there is nothing like being out of camouflage to get shot easier. The Colonel split his men in two fire-teams and ordered them to move to counter-formation. Suddenly a couple loud explosions halted all movement. The smoke cleared, and Private George Michael was on the ground, groggily picking his Flamer up. The Gamma Team was under fire. Sergeant Salt saw a couple of scout Kommandos up inside the building. He could hear them snickering, like little girls who saw a cute boy.

- ‘Flush ‘em out boys! Flank formation.’

While he moved inside the ruined building, while three of his men flank the sides. Lasguns hit the Ork, making barely stumble… until a grenade was thrown blowing half of the second floor. The Ork lay under a pile of rubble, most likely dead. The other Kommando hid, trying still to make George Michael blow up in flames.

The Colonel was accompanied by Lieutenant Dan and his personal Medic, Hawkeye. Their Ecco Team was in position, ready for the assault. Taking defensive positions behind some piled rubble, they started shooting. Two Boyz drop like the dog-piles they are… but the mob was growing quickly. Many others were advancing in a hurry. Unknown to the Colonel, a small group of the enemy had flanked them, lead by one who seemed madder than any others. Once they moved around the building, they were surprised at their proximity. Veterans of many encounters, they recognized their leader as a Weirdboy, just as he shot some deadly rays from his eyes. Most of his men were covered by the deadly light, but they seemed completely unharmed.

Almost at the same time, Private George Michael’s flamer went of… loud screams could be heard as the smell of burned Ork flesh seemed everywhere. It got mixed with the burnt of human hair, as a Burna Boy spat some flame at the Colonel’s makeshift stronghold. Only the Colonel suffered minor wounds, but he quickly dismissed them and kept on shooting his lasgun.

The Orks seemed to be sacrificing Boyz as a diversion. DaBank could see him now… the Ork Boss was not painted white. He was an albino. At that moment he saw him in full form. His inhuman muscles gleaming with sweat, his form advancing with purpose. He was actually directing the others on how and where to move. Every Ork seemed stumbling with every step, as if they had never seen organized combat. The Colonel was sure that once they got their formations right, they may become a force to be reckoned with.

The choice now was clear. The Last Chancers had to retreat. They were not ready for a full Ork assault of this magnitude. The Colonel would gather their men, and destroy the Albino and his Orks on his own terms. Now, he had to figure out what would become of his mission.

Tobias transmitted data like there was no tomorrow. Most of it was ignored by the Magos, but eventually the core transmission would call his eye. Was this a new breed of Orks? What would be the consequences of their existence for the Imperium. Is the Albino responsible for the missing men or is this an isolated incident? Would the Colonel divert his men to deal with the upcoming Ork menace or stick to the original rescue plan? Only time will tell…

I agree, Mordheimer is gifted at writing.

My writing is more like a Freshman college prep writer and Mordheimer is the Nobel Peace Prize author.
