So I built a pirate ship last weekend for my undead pirates (which you can find in another post if you don't remember them). It was a fun project but I am having trouble with painting. I feel it needs some help but I am not sure what to do with it does it need more color or what? I started all brown and it seemed to boring I added the black bands but it seemed like it was incomplete. HELP me fix it! anyway here are some pictures feedback/ideas more than welcome, as it is still a WIP needs to get finished before I move onto another project.

Sorry I should have put a figure in for scale I will do that when it is complete. The ship is about 19 inches long and 4.5 inches wide.

Firstly that ship is very impressive - I like!! Though I can see where you are coming from with it looking slightly bland. The following are a couple of things you might consider:

- Barnacles
- Decay/Weathering/Damage
- Skulls/Totems (ala the pirate ship in the substory from 'Watchmen')
- Banners/Crew colours
- Jolly Rogger
- Barrels/Crates/General stowage

Just some ideas that you might find interesting...

Very nice ship! Great work so far.

I recommend the following thread
https://boringmordheimforum.forumieren.com/scenery-and-terrain-f4/mordheim-scale-ships-for-sartosa-t1459.htm?sid=ba73d65de6f76705783eca444fcbfdb6

There are a bunch of links to research and other ship builders work.

I would recommend adding a lighter color of wood work either as the deck or a band of lighter boards on the hull.
Actual ships also had painted hulls and railings as well. Your ship could benefit from something as simple as a quick dry brush with a lighter brown.

Keep in mind that sails and details like lanterns and bells will add color as well.

Here's a photo of my first completed ship the OS Ferlangen

Again great work!

And then I remember that you want help with a ship for Undead Pirates. Your ship has risen from the depths! It needs lots of aging and damage and barnacles and the like.

Here's a toy ship for research

Hope this helps,

VERY NICE! The unfinished wood does convey a Undead/Haunted feel to the Vessel. However, as Von Kurst mentioned, ships are painted; the guiding principle of the Navy is "if it moves, salute it; if it doesn't move paint it." You could have the paint work fade to the natural wood, or perhaps add repaired spots of painted wood, if you don't want the whole ship painted.
If you intend to pierce the sides for cannons, you could add colorful gun ports. Deaf Nala Smiley

I have a fleet of my own....I am curious: what did you decide to do, mate? For more inspiration, you should check out Wolfgang's undead ship on Page 2 of his album (see the link below):

This is just fabulous, and he does not use a lot of color on the ship. He has banacles and bleached wood tones. Wonderful work, particularly on the lanteen-rigged sails that look like skin!
